crankshaft sensor

Featured Replies

Finally my octavia 1.6 se broke down on the way home ,rac turned up 20 mins later and the car started ,he followed me home the car broke down again .He towed me home .He scanned the car and it showed no faults .He said 90% sure it's the crankshaft sensor ,i have ordered one and will collect it tomorrow.Where is the best place for me to download a manual to help me fix it please ? The problem only happens on way home never in the mornings

Thanks in advanced

I have changed the crankshaft sensor and the car is still just conking out or not starting now and again, though it's getting  more regular .This morning while waiting for the garage to open and idling it just stopped and wouldn't start .I pushed the car out the way and it then started. The mechanic who serviced my car says it the battery and something to do with the immobiliser and key fob .He seems to think changing the battery should fix it ?

He is recommending a platinum battery .

What do you think ?

Took the car to a garage, they said it was the tempreture sensor ,which they replaced .

I broke down going to work the next day . My car seems to drive for a certain length of time then cuts out.I have broke down twice on the exact same place going home .Leave the car alone for 10 min or so then it starts again ,any clues please ?

The garage has had it for 3 days and don't have a clue what's wrong with the car .

When you say it conked out, describe in detail what happens.

Eg, does it splutter, does the temp go up, does it crank over afterwards?

Is the engine light on?

Is it the fuel cap sealing too tightly/breather blocked. When it conks out, try opening the fuel cap.

Need more details?

when it conks out it just stops running ,everything works ,lights and stuff .

The erg light and the engine light stay on the dash .The light that is red and looks electric wave came on last time ,When I try to restart straight away it just turns over and doesn't seem to want to fire .What I have noticed a couple of times is ,when I'm driving the car seems to lurche just for a second like it's going to conk out but carrys on . if I just leave it running ,idling after a certain time the car just dies ,but will start again in 10 mins .

Sounds like the garage needs to scan with more upmarket scanner.

Does the engine light come on BEFORE it dies or when it is sputtering?

Almost seems like an electrical connector failing intermittently. Loose fuse or relay which is effected by softening or expansion of plastic with application of engine heat??

I guess some places don't have the top notch scanner

It sounds like

1) some sensor failing as it warms up.

2) fuel starvation so I'd be cracking the fuel cap next time it dies (or drive home with cap off)

3) some electrical connection failing as it warms up.

Very hard to pin point if not scanning a code, but you could try dousing the engine with cool water and trying to restart when it dies. Focus on sensors etc. The idea is that you cool them down and that replicates the waiting 10 min.

Once you get this to work, try cooling different sensors and through process of elimination work out what one is the culprit.

I thought I would let people know that replacing the fuel cap seems to have sorted out my problems .The car hasn't stalled conked out since .

Had the same in an old fiat van. Would run and then stop randomly. Eventually it stopped completely Turns out the guy who had the van before had replaced cap as he losst original but it wasn't vented so caused a vacuum. My tank actually got pulled in and eventually blocked diesel uptake. I would never have worked it out but the tank looked like it had been crushed at the bottom. At least yours was a simple fix unlike mine that needed tank removed and blown out again.

Rac arrived scanned the car and old codes shown up ,I had got the car started again when he arrived .He erased old codes and scanned again .The car didn't show any codes after reset. He said putting on a new battery could cause old codes to show again and he said erasing them could be all I need .

attached the scan the RAC did before he erased the codes .

I think you need to get it scanned either at a dealer or someone with vcds. The scanners that RAC AA use sometimes don't pick up faults in certain sections. As previously said it does sound like an electrical fault that is ok when car is cool but happens once warmed up.

A first place to check is the strip fuses in front of battery . They can look perfectly good but have a tendency to develop hair line cracks which are very difficult to see. The crack opens when warm and breaks the electrical circuit and reconnects when cool. Sons ABS warning used to come on every day after about 5 miles. Leave it for about half an hour and it was fine then back on again. Not sure what you mean by red electrical wave warning?

Meant to add I doubt it would be the battery as if its voltage had dropped to the point the car shut off it wouldn't start or turn over again. Same with key fob. The reader in the ignition barrel reads the chip in the key. The battery is to operate the lock unlock and I doubt once codes are cleared a new battery would make them appear again?
