Scout Diesel Engine Oil

Featured Replies

We’ve had our Scout now for 7 years and it sailed through its MOT again today as usual. 👍

The only thing is that it now uses a lot more oil than it once did. I mentioned this to the garage this morning and the technician told me that this was usual for this model of car and in fact one litre per month  it’s not unusual.
I check all the fluid levels regularly so this isn’t a major problem but the price of the oil is getting higher and higher like everything else.

I have been using Castrol EDGE Professional LongLife III 5W-30 4L Engine Oil (sorry about text size change!).

Is there a cheaper recommended alternative please?

cheers,

John

You don't say what engine your Scout has?

Does that Castrol EDGE have a VAG approval code, and if so is it the correct one for your engine?

I would question the comment that one litre of oil per month is "usual", my 2016 Octavia doesn't need topping up between "annual" services and I'm averaging nearly 10,000 miles per year!

@PetrolDave i’m not absolutely sure about the exact engine type Without looking up the details but I believe it is 185BHP if that identifies it.
I did google this before posting today and there seemed to be an old thread about the same issue where members were using a similar amount of oil. I have used this oil ever since I bought the car some seven or so years ago. It was recommended to me around that time I seem to remember by other members of this forum.

Well obliviously something is wrong. A litre of oil in a month is excessive consumption. Assuming you dont drive 10000 miles in a month.

184hp 2.0 tdi can use any VAG 507 specified oil.

Just calculated that I’ve used about 3  litres over 15 months, so on average 1/5 litre per month.

How much driving during the 15 months? One cud do 3000 or 30000 miles in 15 months.
