Coolant

Hello,

I have a 68 plate petrol Vrs 230. I'm having issues with the coolant / Engine in that the coolant has completely emptied despite me filling it a couple of weeks ago. The floor beneath the engine is wet. The radiator keeps kicking in when driving and yesterday when coming off the motorway I got the engine overheating warning but then about 2 seconds the needle dropped back down to normal temperature and the warning went.

Having read other posts I can only presume it is a water pump issue but unfortunately I'm not mechanically that knowledgeable I was just looking for thoughts / confirmation that's what the issue likely is! I have attached photos of what it looks like looking down from the top of the engine to the water beneath.

Yeah, sounds like water pump regulator problem.

On another note, the wet in the photos seem more like oil than coolant? Especially with coolant I wud expect more purple/pink color. However, might just appear like that in the photos and be coolant.

How does your oil look like if you check the dip stick?

About the coolant disappearing, can you find any purple/pink leaks/traces if you look around the engine. Probably should be observed from below to see if water pump is leaking, covers might cover the view from above but with such big leak it would drain past the cover and should be visible from below. Or you can try ie. putting your phone down there while filming video. However, this does not matter very much since best action for you is most likely to take it somewhere for diagnosis and fixing.

If timing belt and/or water pump was changed recently, i wud try to get the pump changed in warranty.

How much did it take to refill?

Was it just the coolant reservoir which was empty or the entire system?

You may have air in the system if it got low enough.

I'd not be driving far until you got it sorted. If you run it out of coolant you'll do serious damage to the engine

If you're not mechanically minded it may be the garage for you my friend.

A good look around the engine bay with a torch should locate the leak though. Especially if you remove the lower cover and look from below with torch
