2.0 tdi burning oil 0W-20

Featured Replies

I have a Skoda Karoq 2.0 TDI, 2wd, 85kW, year 2023, and first time user. In the first 10k km, I received a message that oil levels are low and should be topped up.

I’ve contacted the dealer and was told that due to low oil density of 0w-20, there’s a tendency to burn ~1L of engine oil per year.

Did you experience this, how common is the issue? My car is still in full warranty.

Looking forward to any feedback or recommendations.

thanks!

Although many modern engines do not tend to use oil between 10,000 miles service intervals,  compared to the engines in the 1970s cars cars when I started driving. The reality is ALL manufacturers will specify a normal oil consumption figure, 0.5L per 1,000 miles for example. Which over the course of 10,000 miles equates to 5 Litres. Oil consumption of 1 Litre per 10,000 km or per years doesn't seem excessive. Having said that my VW Touran 2.0 L TDI in 11 years and 108,000 miles never needed oil topped up between each annual service.

May use 0.5 litres in 1,000 km.  621 miles that is.  1 litre in 1,242.

Not that it should in the UK conditions, weathers, no HIGH MOUNTAIN PASSES, towing an elephant in HIGH SUMMER.

First 5,000 miles has been mentioned in Owners Manuals for decades along with the other stuff.

In the first 10,000 km it is Simply Cleaver to check the oil level.

When you get the car and occasionally and top up if required and not wait for warning lights.

Or trust the full quantity of oil is in the engine when you get it.

10k-km… barely run in. Give the engine a good chance to prove itself, however, contact your dealer ( you did). Preferably in writing ( proof), so they never can deny that you did complain about it.

My (ex-) diesels always used a bit of oil, but there was no need to top between the 15kkm service intervals, both of these ran on 0W30 ( a 2.0 tdi pd and a 1.6 tdi cr)

Currently running a 1.0 tsi and this also uses a bit of oil (0W20), but les than a liter in 20 kkm.
