Wing mirror oddity!

Featured Replies

I was driving some friends home last night and for some reason when I tried to move both wing mirrors (electric wing mirrors) only the left mirror moved. When I tried the left only setting only the right one moved. This confused the hell out of me.

However today when I drove the car, the mirrors worked fine.

Anyone have any idea what went wrong?

Sounds like gremlins in the CANBUS, a bit like when the windows swap sides. If it's sorted itself out, I wouldn't worry about it :D

Check that there's not a spider stuck behind it.

erm, CANBUS? Whats that?

You can move wing mirrors at the same time - how do you do that!

A mechanic said it was the ecu needing to reseting it's self after the car having had a lot of mechanical parts changed, and that once I restart the car the ecu will reseting itself and it will all be sorted.

iirc if you adjust the O/S mirror to where you want it , then adjust the N/S mirror to where you want it , when you switch back to the O/S mirror position it will adjust both mirrors at the same time so that you can still see out of both mirrors if you or someone else has moved the seat

CANBUS is the way the convenience unit talks to the mirrors and windows, I think. A bus is basically a common pipeline for signals, rather than having lots and lots of wires :D

And yep, most of the VAG cars have L+R and L as positions on the mirror switch so you can adjust both mirrors and then tweak the left one afterwards. I personally prefer having L and R operating independently :D

Mine seems to be L, heated mirror or R setting - IIRC that's how it is supposed to behave (on the Fabia vRS at least)

It's the default setting on my 1.9TDI. Default position means movement of the 'joystick' adjust both wing mirrors at the same time. Twisting the **** round and holding it in position means joystick movements adjust only the left mirror. The third position activates the mirror demisters. This system is pants design because it means if only the driver side mirror is off you have to move both mirrors until the driver one is ok then adjust the left one back to where it should be.

The Idea as said above is you adjust both until you can see out the drivers mirror perfectly THEN adjust the passengers side, which works independantly so both the mirrors are set to you, then when say SWMBO drives the car and she is a foot smaller and a foot nearer the steering wheel she can adjust the mirrors when set to 'driver' and they will both be in the right place, you jump in again and its just a matter of one movement back to your setting.

Pre facelift is L+R-Heat-R, post-facelift is L-Heat-R.

I had this problen a few days ago........A large spider was holding the glass with all it's eight legs...........Every time I moved the glass the Spider moved it back..
