Auto luggage compartment cover - how does it work, as mine doesn't ?

Featured Replies

Hello all, new owner loving my late 2015 Superb Estate, BUT have an issue with the auto luggage cover.

It doesn't latch in the 'fully closed' position, there is physically nothing in the slot that the cover runs in to prevent it just retracting back to the intermediate position, so i cant cover the contents of the boot. There is an area where it looks like something should be on both sides however.

So my question is, how does the auto retract feature work ? My thinking is there should be a solenoid activated catch that holds the cover shut. Then when opening the boot, the solenoid retracts allowing the cover to roll back to the intermediate position ?

The owners manual doesn't describe how its supposed to work, just that it does. The workshop manual doesn't mention anything either. I have found a part on ETKA called 'Release lever Servo Motor' left and right, but there are no pictures online of this part and ETKA isn't clear, and i cant find anything these are actually joined to !

Any help appreciated, even if its just a pic of the area in question from someone with a working latching/releasing mechanism.

As an aside i have the parts catalogues and some workshop manuals if anyone needs help locating parts based on VIN.

Thanks

I think the release levers you are referring are the ones to drop the seats. There is not button, lever or command to manually activate the retraction, only an option to enable/disable in the menu, I think it was in car settings, I can check next time I am with the car, same as in the luggage compartment.

I have this feature but I actually disabled it because it snaps/rolls back quite sharply and I am concerned it will not last//, I am a bit smoother in rolling the thing back ... call me a fool, but I fear the stupid roller costs an arm and a leg....

Thanks for replying. The remote seat release lever is part 18 in that diagram, so this is different.

I have the option in the menu, but I cannot manually set the luggage cover to fully closed position for it to then open, if that makes sense? The cover does not latch to anything in the fully closed position. Maybe I should take a photo tomorrow! The option in the menu must activate something that allows the cover to retract to the middle position when the boot is open.

I have this feature on my 2023 superb & the option at to active in the menu.

The boot cover behaves exactly like the manual version in my Octavia in normal use, you can pull it half way or fully closed & it clicks into place.

A slight twist downwards will cause it to retract to the previous position.

If I operate the electric boot button, kick under the bumper or use the key fob button, then the cover will automatically retract to half way as the boot starts to open.

As you can turn on/off the function via settings I assume like you it must be some kind of magnet or solenoid which is triggering the boot to retract.

Unfortunately I've no idea where it is though.

The problem i have !

And this is the area where I think there should be an electric latch, but there isn't. Same both sides. Looks pretty knackered now I've actually looked at it in detail...

I think you've found the right place.

I was just looking at mine & took the same photo!!

You can see below there is a sprung loaded catch which is what holds the cover in place.

When I "twist" manually the cover it pushes this down & manually releases.
I guess the "electronic" part has a small solenoid/magnet which pulls down the catch to release the cover.

Yours looks like somebody has completely destroyed the catch.

Unfortunately it doesn't look like it would be easy to remove & repair due to the location & surrounding trim.

For reference if anyone searches this, I have found a Superb being stripped that shows the lever arm from the back of the panel (labelled 3V9 867 825 for Left Side but that doesn't actually exist, i think my part number above is correct). This arm is spring loaded and is the same whether you have an auto cover or not.

The Solenoid (white part) when extended (off) allows the retaining arm to go up and down using the spring i.e. it will retain the luggage cover, or you can twist the cover and the spring will push down allowing the cover to roll back manually. When the solenoid is retracted (when the boot is opened) it pulls the arm down and locks it there so the cover isn't retained and rolls back automatically. I assume it goes back out quickly afterwards. Mine is stuck in the down position or missing entirely ! I intend to strip it all apart and report back

I cannot find the solenoid at all on ETKA. Its doesn't seem to have a part number printed on it on any picture either which is odd. Its also not mentioned in the workshop manual. Very odd.

For reference on our old Octavia the retaining latch was only clipped in and came loose over time. However, I was able to pull the trim panel off enough at the rear to find it, relocate it and glue it in place. You may be able to do similar?

I’m with ‘leolito’, disabled it as the snapping back routine is more than a little concerning…..

I couldn't find it either but I found this site very useful with part diagrams, maybe search for the clip & the solenoid will be on the same diagram?

Yeah, and I admit it is a pity have a feature and not use it but ... what to do? Not always you like the way things are operated, but here I see no solution except to find a way to diminish the spring force that winds the roller cover.

I think this is the diagram, and I think no. 20 is the affected solenoid.

Feeling guilty, and since I had to digest the dinner, I walked towards the garage and pushed the car forward, to open the lid and look at the thing, unfortunately the phone with 11% battery decided flash was a no-no so no photos.

But I did see what at the end I have a twin little hook thing on both sides, which if you push it it feels resistance, and then goes down, like being spring loaded like written above.

So how to test the system .... well as the seats were down since I have inside a bicycle carrier I need to put together, I said "go inside the boot and see"

Ok, so first I went to the menu and activate the function, then I go inside the boot and press the remote with nonchalance .... Nothing, weird, so I extended my arm and press the button on the lid, and the boot closes.

Now I realize that the stupid but SMART car would not let me use the remote since the gearbox was in neutral ... so I had to slither in between the box of the carrier and the roller, towards the rear door and from there drop to the ground like on a SAS demonstration ... in that moment I did realize the true error in having a double steakburger with fried egg and extra cheddar before these activities ... oh well.

Put the car in P and restarted the exercise. Now the remote worked flawlessly.

When the door opens, there is a little "ZIG" and the hook goes down, for like a fraction of a second, if you blink you miss it. I left my finger on it and it feels goes down, at the same time you hear the solenoid. The hook looks like on a plastic pin.

Most likely someone not very delicate broke yours, possibily pushing the roller blind without first pressing it down to make it release the catches.

But before that, try to follow my method - sans burger, better - and see if you can hear the solenoid trying to do something ....

I will try it tonight. I have stripped the panel back and all looks OK, but the solenoid is frozen in the retracted position on the passenger side, which makes the hook/pin permanently in the down position. If that's the case its odd that they've both failed... ?

If you disconnect the solenoid electrical connector, normal it should release the hook giving manual operation.

Could it be a short circuit on the loom for the solenoid forcing it to be always active?

If you can lift the hook/pin without resistance, then there is no more connection between the actuator and whatever is supposed to actuate ... can you actually hear it moving? In a quiet environment is clearly audible.

It would not be strange for both to have failer, but in that case a look at the electrics would help.

My snap pretty hard when doing auto mod, don't know is this right or not way to open but I disabled it to operate auto...

Last night with a mirror i was able to get a pic of the solenoids locked in the pulled back position (circled blue) so the actuator pin (circled red) was holding the hook down. Unplugged the solenoids (circled green) and they do not move of their own accord. I've removed them from the trim panel (two clips, very easy) and they are probably not 'solenoids', they seem to be geared internally so i suspect they have to receive 12v on alternate pins on the wiring loom in the connector to drive the actuator pin in and out. They move freely out of the car and do respond to a 12v power supply. Next test is the wiring harness in the car with a multimeter. As this is on both sides, I'm hoping its a fuse, though nothing else is non-functioning....

Next update, doing this more if anyone ever searches for this in the future.

The solenoids/servos ended up not working all of the time, after about 10 actuations on the bench, they would both get stuck.

Confirmed that the part numbers i posted in the first post are correct for the whole assembly, however i took the white plastic outer off, the the black rubber cover under that.....and it becomes a VW part 3B0959782A, which is used as a central locking motor, glove box release in the A6, fuel cap release in the Mk7 Golf etc.etc. One thing they all have in common is that they fail all the time !

So I've ordered a pair and will fit and report back when they arrive

IMG_4159.JPG

Great job! Expecting to see finish product video when you complete it

Where did you order from & what's the price?

I'm really surprised about this design concept.

For something so simple as this I would really expect that if the actuator fails the manual function should still remain.

It would also make it easier for production like this as the feature will work with both automatic and manual modes only depending on whether the actuator is fitted or not

Edited by Gabbo

Well in this case, the manual function always remain, this is a "convenience feature" but if it failes or is it deactivated, does not harm or impact anything .....

Great piece of info and hope this stays in the archive for future reference! 😉

Right fixed it last night. I used the servo motors from the VW Golf Mk7 fuel cap release as i needed one of those as well, so ordered three. They are marginally different but fit and work. Cost was £5.63 each delivered from Aliexpress https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005008075672052.html

Interestingly i couldn't move the rod in and out by hand (I could on the old ones) and their default position is 'out' which results in the parcel shelf still working manually in case of a failure. Anyway, all fitted and worked straight away!

All is well, when it ends well! 😁
