No comms with any modules, non start

Featured Replies

Hi, new to forum. Hopefully someone might be able to help. 2011 Octavia Scout, 2.0 diesel. Will start and immediately cuts out. No comms with any module except ECM via k-line. Have changed Gateway module, ECM and instrument cluster for known working units. Unplugged every module. Checked every fuse. All relays good. Other faults - electric windows not working, engine fans running, parking brake warning light flashing. Do not appear to have any commas on Can Bus, would be grateful for any suggestions.

Hello, welcome to the forum.

Engine start then immediate stop sounds like the immobiliser cutting off.

Thank you for the reply. Normally I’d agree but in this case it seems to be a symptom of a lack of communication with every single module 😳

Not sure, but would it not be the case that the ECU shuts everything down if the immobiliser was activated?

Not I’m aware of, immobiliser just prevents the vehicle from starting, it doesn’t shut every other module down but quite happy to be advised if I’m wrong……

I'd think the first step is to plug a reader into the OBD port.

As I said in original post I can not communicate with any of the modules. So to clarify I have tried communicating via the OBD and none of the modules are responding via Can Bus. The only module I can access is the ECM and that is via the K-Line.

Did you check Fuse 12 (Control unit for CAN databus) in the engine bay fuse box?

Fuse location is shown in the handbook about page 211.

If you don't have a handbook then download it from the sticky thread at the beginning of this forum.

Thank you so much for your reply. Unfortunately, yes have checked that. Got power and earths to Gateway so it looks like it going to be a short or break in the wiring loom. Once again, thank you for replying.

Is the cause of the original failure known - why were modules replaced?

We swapped out the Gateway module, ECM & instrument cluster from another working car with no change to the problem.

... But what is the vehicles history? - was the vehicle running, then just shut down? - or was it bought as non-runner, as a project? or was it involved in an accident?

Car had exact same issue about 3 months ago. Was recovered in as non starter and with no comms. But following morning “it had fixed itself!” Was absolutely fine for the past three months and then one morning wouldn’t start again and here we are…….i had hoped someone on here had come across a similar issue. Leaning towards it being a wiring issue with the can bus circuit

Resolved! No one ever seems to post when they have fixed a problem! So, wire from fuse 12 to pin 1 of gateway, which should be battery live, was broken in the loom. Patched in new wire and all fixed. Can’t imagine anyone will ever the same problem but you never know….

Fantastic, great news about the fix. Thanks for the resolution update.
