2018 1.0 TSI CHZC Pre facelift Engine Oil

Featured Replies

Hoping someone can help. I’ve read a few threads on here but can’t find one specific to our vehicle age.

Basically, we purchased a Fabia (2018 pre facelift) for the wife last year to do school runs, shopping etc. it has 1 prev owner and full Skoda history. Now, it’s due a service and I called the dealer for a quote and asked what oil they will be using. I was told it’s 0w20 on their system for this vehicle. However, on previous invoices etc, it states 502.00 spec oil which is 5w40! There is mention of fully synthetic 5w on one invoice as well but no info on the rest.

Bearing in mind this is the same dealer!

So now I’m confused! Wasn’t planning on using this dealer anyway as it’s way too far, but wanted to find out what they had been using but they couldn’t tell me only that it states on their system that the recommended oil is 0w20. I just want the best oil to ensure long life of this little engine doing short runs.

Cheers

VW 502 00, 5w 40 FS if you do Annual / Fixed oil and filter.

VW504 00 /507 00 is perfectly fine for Fixed or Variable Servicing. 0w 30 FS III or 5w 30 FS III

PS

Personally i would keep with the Non Long Life oil for a long lived engine.

So VW 502. 5w 40 FS.

Thank you, I intend to service annually which will be around 8k miles or less so 502.00 spec would be best in this case.

Referring to that document you have posted, ours is not listed as it’s the 81kw version not the 85kw. So don’t know why the dealer is saying 0w20 for ours. I don’t think it has the GPF but could be wrong!

Thanks again

I think you are pre GPF.

As it is if a main dealership were using VW502 00 then why would they not still?

As it is they might say we only use Long Life oil, but if so then they still need to stock and use VW504 00 / 507 00 for the earlier cars, they can not just say we only have 0w 20 FS IV for everything.

Exactly. And considering that the 02w20 508.00 i not suitable for older vehicles. It worries me that they suggest using it for our car!

I’ve had a look under the bonnet around the exhaust area but can’t see a GPF (I don’t think so anyway).

Hi , my Superb 1.5 Tsi auto currently runs on 0 W 20 engine oil ( Castrol LL but on an annual service plan. The car came from the factory will the same oil.

On the cars fifth service I was told that Skoda had given an instruction to the dealer to use 5 W 30 on this service.

On the next service re engine oil fill once again is 0 W 20.

The engine uses no engine oil between services ( 3000 miles )

The engine tick over noise is the same ( to me )

When possible I use Shell V Power and slight improvement in mpg.

I really use V power to keep the internal engine components clean !

@bigcar

I would love to see the TPI that the Dealership got at the time your car was getting it,s 5th service.

I suspect there was BS from someone at the dealership.

The important point is your WLPT Certificated 1.5 TSI ACT with a GPF came from the factory with 0w 20 FS.

VW 504 / 507 can be used & not only VW 508 / 509, and actually it could be VW502 00 used with a 3,000 mile Oil & Filter change regime.

Tick over is going to be very different, 3 cylinder 1.0 TSI and a 1.5 TSI ACT, but the oil viscosity used in your 1.5 TSI ACT should not be noticeable, but then you are in the UK and really never going to experience -25*oC say.

You or anyone could use 97 ron or 99 ron E5 and have the additive package with detergents and maybe £2.50-£3 a tank less it is Sainsbury Super unleaded or Tesco Momentum 99. Maybe even the same price as Shell / BP / Texaco / ESSO E10 95 ron.

Called several dealers this morning and they are all telling me it should be 0w20 508.00. But when asking why have they used 502.00 in all previous services, I can't get a straight answer! Could be just a generic/old description in the invoices and 0w20 used.

@dewindoeth I take it you mean you called Dealerships. Was that a service desk person, a NVQ maybe in communications / keyboard skills, no knowledge of mechanical engineering or the ability to Call a Friend or a Master Tech. Trained on the job by someone like the Service Manager who has no training or qualifications in Mechanical Engineering.

Parks Skoda Hamilton's Service Person and at the time the Floor Walker Gordon is a moron said VW502 00 / 5w 40 FS was not a Full Synthetic oil and would not use it. Yet they have a Service Offer and that was what was used.

There are many that say they only keep / use Full Synthetic oil. They mean Long Life oil.

No way Jose should they use 0w 20 FS IV at VW Group Repair Centres / Dealerships on the pre 2018 engines.

But as it was in 2018/19 they were using VW504 00 / 509 00 when they were supposed to be using the 0w 20 FS IV.

Some took their time learning, and for some it was all a mystery to them even though it is their Full Time Employment.

What's printed on a Dealership invoice may be some but not all correct in actual detail, it might be a set text or how the person on the keyboard or computer remembers or interprets the "worksheets" and/or could be out of date to their current practice - perhaps economical with accuracy and even perhaps truth.

As with many car manufacturers VW seems to have the car owners do some of their research and development by real world use of their products where they might find their compromises in designs and build and suppliers mistakes (never VW engineers mistakes or omissions). VW have said wrong oil in their DSG boxes before and change their VW oil specs and coolant specs - no doubt from progressive developments of course (some from their real world use product users).

They are not all the same by region or by season. Be that E5 or E10. Storage, and which depots from, that received in the base fuel.

Lower Octane /Energy than sold to you & bought & paid for is fraud. They are to meet as a minimum.

If not then that is a matter for the Trading Standards / Authorities. HMRC.

There is Summer & Winter Formulation, and into the UK can come fuel from the Continent after March and that can be Winter Formulation. ' Less Hygroscopic'.

Yeap, all true, and I've seen those PDFs before from you thank you, just general interest. You can only expect the chap to get samples from fuel stations he goes to, unless as he said people send him samples, all non-laboratory conditions, just general info for those that 5 and 10 mean exactly spot on 5 or 10 always. Note I put "up to" (and locations and as at dates) on the, er, notes.

Personally I want ethanol with a turbo petrol that can deal with it.

Going to go for 0w30 oil to be there or there about in the middle and confirm to either 502.00 or 504/7.00

Hi , As I always carry a litre of engine oil in the boot I could find no reference to what engine oil was on the last service.

My wife went shopping with her credit card and I went to the dealership that supplied my car to enquire re oil grade. The salesman was honest when I asked but he spoke to the technician who actually service my car and he came out to speak to me.

He told me that Skoda had requested cars that run on 0 W 20 are changed over to 5 W 30.He then told me that they cannot supply 1 litre top up oil because they use to purchase 1 litre pack of oils x 10 that cost them a fortune and they then had to dispose of the plastic cartons. They now purchase lubricant in bulk.

At the next service I asked what engine oil was being used in my car and I was told that Skoda had requested that 0 W 20 be used. All oil used manufactured by Castrol who confirmed the above in writing to me.

I use correct engine as recommended by the car manufacturer.

Reason is a friend of mine has a Yeti 4 x 4 auto diesel.Wife driving along in mid Wales and the turbo blew up resulting in a £6000.00 bill for an engine rebuild.

His cars are serviced to the book but what caused the failure who knows but I would suggest incorrect engine oil is near the top of the list.

@bigcar 0w 20 FS IV was and is the correct oil for your car, and Skoda / VW used to recommend Castrol and put a bottle of it in cars. (As stated in various places regarding topping up the different spec so 5w 30 can be used to top up.)

Dealers often used Quantum, and still do now, and that is from Fuchs Oils. TPS supply that now.

But the OP asked about a different car from yours.

Many dealerships do not service engines from Bottles of oil.

That never stopped them selling it at the Parts Desk in bottles.

Back in 2018 many had not stocked up with VW508 00 /509 00 and had no idea what the car needed.

& they were charging £15 a litre back then.

@dewindoeth the 0w 30 FS III will be to VW504 00 / 507 00, so long life oil for fixed or variable servicing.

I'm surprised that the service tech did not suggest buying a 1 litre top up container of the correct oil from their parts department, it seems like, well at least now and again, even brake fluid is no stocked in 1 litre packaging - as it is only usually bought in in bulk, like the engine oils, for use by the workshop.
