So recently bought a 2009 1.4 TDI BMS Greenline Fabia estate that developed a knocking sound from the top end. Fairly confident its the camshaft and lifters that have failed but does anybody know what else these 3 cylinder diesels suffer from? As while the engine and box is out I might as well go through it all. Did see some posts about injectors failing causing pistons to melt and oil pump issues etc. But could they have just been one offs? I'm used to 1.9 TDIs so this 3 cylinder stuff is new to me.

There have been a few documented cases of the oil pump/balance shaft chain failing, but it’s fairly uncommon.

My dad and brother have both had 1.4s and had no mechanical issues with them. Both gone over 100k miles no issue
