Did fitting an anti-theft Isolation Switch mess up my power steering motor?

Featured Replies

Previous car was Skoda Fabia 1.6tdi 105SE Local overnight parking is not good.. so I had an auto electrician fit a hidden switch as an anti-theft Isolation Switch... It worked well.

But. three months later, I went to local shops. and after parking the car. when I returned to it.. the car started as normal, BUT the steering was very heavy..

Mechanic from garage across the road came and . got it across the road into the workshop, next day i got the report diagnosed the power steering motor had failed.

Cost to get it back on the road £1500.

As the car had done 140,000 and was "looking tired".. (although it drove well !.. and was otherwise well maintined... ) I opted to look for a replacement.

Question is... Would the fitting of the isolator switch, have messed up the Power Steering Motor, after three months,.. or is this a "general failure" of this car?

My replacement car is also a Skoda Fabia, 1.6tdi ELEGANCE.. model , 2011.. (Very Low Mileage) so I am considering getting the auto electrician to fit again the isolator switch.. BUT only if it is not associated with the previous Power Steering Motor Failure.

I can see no possible way that fitting an ignition inhibiter switch could affect the power steering system.

Does your Fabia not have a factory fitted alarm and immobiliser?

OK . Thanks Warriror193.. I was sceptical...but these modern cars are baffling in their ways... e.g. sometimes they show the glow plug light warning,... but it`s the brake lights that are faulty !..

Reckon the Auto Electrician would have warned me if he knew it would be a problem..but posted on here, cos I just needed to be assured by other skoda drivers.

As far as I know the only "immobiliser" is in a chip in the key...so ... wrong key.. no start.. but the "naughty boys" find ways around this.. !..

Thanks

Have a nice day.

Unless your Fabia is fitted with KESSY, the immobiliser chip fitted to your key is not a particular security issue - the standard key (with immobiliser chip) would need to be in very close contact to a reader to be cloned.
