Phantom braking without audiovisual alarm

Featured Replies

Hi,

does anybody experienced phantom braking without any alarm indication?

Mine at least once per day, when I approach to a specific intersection in the afternoon, below 6kmph activates the Parking mode without any alarm indication.

You can imagine, how annoying and dangerous it is...

Also sometimes at highway exits, when I using the recuperation only, it activates the full brake for a second. The ABS also activating. There are no alarm at all. The car continous as nothing happeed after all...

It has all the possible software updates recently...

Personally, I've experienced it only a few times when backing up, even though the speed was very low.
I believe it’s always been long grass that triggers the sensors, because in my parking spot it never does that—even though I park less than 20 cm from the wall (corner, two walls).
But what I hate the most is that the collision detection is too sensitive. None of the other cars I’ve owned beeped that much (referring to Octavias) 😁

Many thanks for the feedback. I usually switching off the maneuver braking right after start, and it solve your issue.

But there is a major difference when any of the Assists initiating braking and my situation.

Since the Assists always provide alarm signal and displays on the dash before braking. In my case, it happening in forward on public roads and there are no indication at all.

Just braking and at low speed sets the gearbox to P itself (the car is still moving when switching it to P).

If I understood correctly, the car brakes on its own and automatically shifts the gearbox into “P”?

It’s a good idea to check a few things, as similar issues have been reported:

  • Make sure your seatbelt is fastened. If it’s not, the car might interpret that you’re not ready to drive.

  • Driver’s door, if it’s open or not fully closed, the gearbox may shift into “P” automatically for safety reasons.

  • Seat sensor, it’s possible that it no longer detects your presence properly.

Most of us are actually dealing more with the issue of automatic braking, especially during parking maneuvers. Here are some useful tips:

  • When parking, move slowly and keep your foot on the brake.

  • The safety system may detect movement around the car (people, animals, tall grass, objects, other cars) and suddenly brake, even if those things are a few meters away and not a real threat.

  • After you exit a parking spot, check if the system has exited parking mode. If not, press the “P” button on the tablet to manually deactivate it.

Also, the car can brake without any warning sound, which can be confusing.

These systems are designed with safety in mind, but in certain situations they can become intrusive. Ideally, you should learn how the car reacts and adapt your driving style especially in tight or crowded areas.

Hopefully, a software update will improve this behavior in the future.

If really in P and not just showing P and the e-brake / parking brake applied it would not move as the front wheels would be locked in PARK by the pawl.

Hi Rigor,

yes your undestanding is correct. It shift to "P" autmatically when the car in movement. And no assist warns before or after...

The car was in the service shop because of this issue (and 94EW +90EE) one week before.

The door sensor was my idea also, but once the car in movement and you are open the door, there is no such reaction. Only when the car stationary and you trying to start it switch back to "P" and prevents the movement. Also warning signal provided when you are opening the door in movement.

Seatbelts are fastened, doors closed properly. I believe the same braking happens at higher speeds also, but the safety electronic of the gearbox refuses the 'P' command over 6kmph.

Yes, it does seem like the issue goes beyond just door or seat sensors, especially if the system doesn’t warn you before or after it shifts to “P” during low-speed movement. That’s definitely not how it should behave.

Still, insist with the dealer and, if possible, show them a video of the issue.

Today I made some trial, opening the door at low speed and it had exactly the same reaction. It is a good point to start.

What is weird, the car usually doing it only at one specific intersection at late afternoon...
