Skoda Octavia 1.0 eTSI cold start jerks

Featured Replies

Hi everyone,

Since this weekend I’m the proud owner of a Škoda Octavia 1.0 eTSI DSG hatchback, a wonderful car so far. Unfortunately, I’m running into the following issue:

When the engine is still cold, it hesitates and jerks (see video); the revs don’t climb smoothly at around 2000 RPM. Im keeping the accelerator pedal at the same spot for the entirety of the video. The same thing happens when I accelerate out of a roundabout: between 2,000 – 3,000 rpm the engine stumbles in the same way. A few minutes later, once everything is up to temperature, the engine runs perfectly again. In the video you can see the oil temperature at around 90 degrees - this was after a 2-3 minute drive, sot he gearbox oil was probably not up to temperature yet.

While the problem occurs, my OBD scanner records the fault code P228C00. Online search results are almost exclusively related to diesel engines, but my car is the petrol version.

Is this a known issue with the 1.0 eTSI? Has anyone else experienced this issue as well?

Thanks in advance for your input!

I've a 1.5 petrol and it does it for the first 20 yards when moving off for the first time in the day. It can be avoided by keeping the revs a little high and slipping the clutch if necessary for those 20 yards. After that it is fine. I've no idea if an error code is produced - I don't have a code reader.

The code you report reads as "fuel pump - low pressure", which makes sense with the behaviour seen.

I had a manual 2020 1.5 TSI Octavia with the same 'Feature' which I got around by waiting for the engine to warm up slightly whereupon the rpm falls to just below 1,000 and the car drives away smoothly.

This 'Feature' was somewhat present at whatever ambient temperature and/ or engine temperature - I just waited with engine idling until the rpm dropped below 1,000. Perhaps the engine needs one or other sensor to reach optimum temperature for emission purposes?

I now own a 2024 1.5 TSI DSG E-Tec which no longer exhibits this trait (Which used to called 'The Kangaroo'! It may be a combination of the DSG box and the (Small) amount of battery-assist, but this engine/ gearbox combination results in a very smooth drive at all times.

Thanks Alan, still seems to do this at a certain position of the accelerator. I'll drop by my dealer to have it checked out. Thats what my extended warranty is for at least :) Good to hear that the 1.5 version if running so smooth, is that the facelift variant already?

Hi again, no I bought an early 2024 model pre facelift.

Cheers, Alan

Quick update on this problem. Had the car taken back to the dealer which replaced; High pressure fuel pump, the ignition coils, the bougies and also the selector lever. Has been running fine ever since 😁
