Replacing Fabia door lock barrel

Featured Replies

Hi,

I have a fabia comfort year 2000, central locking.

the drivers door lock has always been stiff, lack of use, i always unlock from the passenger side.

I put the car in for service, they found the problem, the barrel has broken, i can still lock the car from the passenger side.

They said they would get a replacement, this was a month ago now, have heard nothing yet.

The problem is, if i forget myself and put the key in the drivers side door, the barrel comes out.

Can i get a replacement barrel myself, and is it an easy job to replace it ?

Many thanks for your help.

Its fairly easy to change.

You need to take the grommet out of the end of the door thats inline with the lock. Inside is a T20 tox screw. Carefull unwind this until the screw stops. Now the lock and the back part of the handle will pull out. Swap the barrell over and refit.

Many thanks for your answer.

i presume the door trim has to be removed, anything to look out for in doing this ?

thanks again

no you dont need to take the door trim off , the screw Lummox is on about is just inside the door shut i.e. behind the outer skin the other side to the handle , in fact ive just looked at mine now , there is 2 grommets and the screw will be behind the top one . obviously when you change the barrel assembly you will have 2 different keys for the car , one to open the door with and one to turn the ignition

Re the comment "you will have 2 different keys for the car , one to open the door with and one to turn the ignition"

I had a new lock on the driver's door and found that the new key locked/unlocked both driver's and passenger's doors (central locking is not fitted to my car). It begs the question as to how many other car doors will my car key open

seems very odd that one , did the new key turn the ignition on and start the car ?

Did they order the lock to your key number?

Did they order the lock to your key number?

can you actually order the lock to your original key number ? i know that when the electrician at work does a galaxy door lock , he dismantles the new lock to rebuild it to the old key

Did they order the lock to your key number?

No- that would have cost more and taken longer to order .

Having discovered that the new key also fitted the the passenger door (still with original lock), I tried the old key with the new lock and that also worked.

I use the original key with the new lock (driver's door), with the old lock (passenger door) and of course with the ignition. :)

I keep the two new keys (uncoded) as spares if I ever need them coding. The new key did turn the ignition on and start the car, then cut out

many thanks for your info, i have ordered the barrel, the t20 torx bit ? do i need a special extension for this, as the hole diameter it has to go through to undo the screw looks quite small, thanks again.

i think it is directly under the grommet , not sure though , i'd just pull the grommet out to have a look then you know what you're dealing with

have just picked up new barrel, the back part of the handle they have supplied is different to what i have on the car, there is a groove in it.

how do i remove the barrel from the back part of this handle, it has moved a little but cannot see how it comes out completely, so i can put it into my existing back handle and the car will be original and all the same.

thanks for your great help.

have picked up new item from main dealer, its a different back part of the handle so i need to remove the new lock barrel from the new part, to keep the car looking the same all round.

I have partly removed it, but cannot get any further, do i push the tumblers in ?

Lennox, i really appreciate your help.

I dont understand why it would look different?

Once the trim cap is swapped over it should look identical.

Are these instructions the same for the Fabia vRS? I've removed the torx screw but the barrell will not budge, it's jammed in solid. When I apply pressure to try and get the barrell out the whole door skin is flexing, so it seems like it is catching somewhere else.

How many grommets do you have in the end of the door?

There are 2, the top one had a torx and the bottom one doesn't seem to have anything! It's a 54 plate, registered in September 2004.

You havent removed the torx screw have you?

Right there are two screws one behind each grommet. You need to slacken off the bottom one, undo it until it stops, be gentle, the lock will then come out. The top one just holds the support bracket in.

Thanks Lummox.

I thought the bottom grommet didn't have a torx screw in it but it must look different from the top one. I slackened off the top one, I'll try the bottom one in the morning as its a bit dark now.

Couldn't resist, I grabbed my torch and went out. The bottom torx screw seems like it's embedded, I just unscrewed that and the barrel came out easily. 2 minute job.

Thanks for all the help Lummox.

Glad to be of help :)
