How to attach paddle shift extensions to the shifters?

Featured Replies

Hey all,

Got some of those cheapo extensions to attach onto the back of the paddle shifters - ive got proper big fat fingers so thought theyd be nice to have. Issue is, they dont stick to the shifters whatsoever haha

I tried the "3M" patch it came with along with a whole host of other adhesives that wouldnt be permanent, like a superglue or epoxy, but none of them worked.

Anyone had a similar experience or know the best way to get around this?

I bought some of these off Ali Express and initially they stuck fine, but a few months later one fell off even though I had prepped the buttons and the aluminium paddles by cleaning thoroughly with isopropyl alcohol. I just removed them, recleaned and used genuine 3M double sided tape and they haven't moved since.

I was a bit sceptical that the original tape that came with the paddles was genuine 3M as the logo didn't look quite right and also the tape was light grey instead of almost black.

The tape I used to refix them was 3M VHB (very high bond) which is commonly used in the automotive trade. If you Google it I'm sure you'll find some near to you. Just make sure you are thorough with the cleaning side of things. You can also use Acetone for a more aggressive clean, but be careful with it as it can melt plastic.

The other thing is, once you've stuck them on firmly try and leave them for at least 12 hours to allow the bond to 'cure'.

Thanks for the advice. Is the VHB tape still removable if you wanted to take them off in future? I wouldn't want something that will stick them but have to break the paddles to get them off.

Yes it is removable, you can remove the paddles by using some fishing line or dental floss to 'saw' through the tape and then use something like Goo-Gone or a similar adhesive remover (WD40, petrol or acetone will work at a pinch) and an old rag, preferably something coarse like towelling and rub the reside off. It does take a little effort, but it's a small price to pay for having something that works!

There's more tips and ideas here:
