Accessing relays behind dashboard - totally stuck

Featured Replies

My headlights and blower have stopped working. The parking lights and flash-to-pass still work. The light switch seems fine (tested with multimeter) and the fuses seem fine (fuse 39 I think is the relevant one but I’ve checked them all).

The next step seems to be to check the relays. I have struggled to locate these but by removing the small panel on the side of the dashboard (which is obstructed if the driver door is closed) I can see at least two relays with labels like 645 or maybe 646. However there is not enough space for my to get my arm in to access them.

I have tried undoing three screws close to the fuse box in order to remove more trim but it still seems fastened down. I’ve removed the light switch and tried to remove the air vent but it won’t budge (seems like the upper part of the dashboard is locking it down).

Could anyone please tell me how to access those relays? Thank you.

Looks like the fuse panel has to be completely detached

Thank you. I’ve now done this and I see four relays. Three are labelled 645 and one is labelled 646. I want to remove and test the 646 as that one may be the one for headlights and/or air blower.

When I pull the relay it won’t budge. I’ve tried poking the little tab and that doesn’t seem to do anything.

I’m wondering what I could try next.

Poking the clips may not help. 646 has two tabs moulded in - one each side.

If pressing in both clip levers at the same time doesn't work I'd get two thin tools down the relevant sides of the relay between the clip and the relay body to ease the clips off those tabs. Simultaneously wiggling the relay upwards.

It's been sat in that holder for 10 years so it'll be a bit stiff
