Superb 73 plate: oil questions please

Featured Replies

During my weekly oil check with the dipstick, the level is 1/2 way between min and max.

It was Skoda serviced 4K miles ago @10K miles, now at 14K miles.

The car is the high performance 2 litre petrol engine 4x4 Sport Line. Lovely car.

Question 1

Is this level correct or should I fill to 'Max'?

Question 2

What grade oil is used for these cars and what brand would be used by the Skoda main dealer?

I would like to match the oil inside the engine if I do have to top it up.

Thanks in advance,

Graham.

Needing oil after 4,000 miles in a TSI be it highly tuned or not is not unusual.

Fill to Area A, which is above the cross hatch as shown in a Owners Manual.. That level when at operating temperature.

Is that the level dipped with cold oil before the engine started,

or as the oil needs checked after that. @ normal operating temperature after a few minutes. (4 or 5 minutes is a few.)

Skoda Dealers might well have used Quantum by Fuchs oil.

Likely VW 508 00 / 509 00, so 0w 20 FS IV, is there no sticker under the bonnet.

Ask them if they did, or do they use 0w 30 FS III, VW504 00 / 507 00

Sorry, false alarm.

Found the info in the on-line Manual and the sticker on the front of the engine bay. SAE 0W-30 or VW 505-00 or 507-00

Could do with knowing what brand of oil is used though please.

Interesting it states to check the level engine off but hot. Obviously suits the maintenance work in the dealer (?)

Your post just beat mine!

I checked the oil as usual weekly (and top up screen wash etc) but engine COLD.

With hot oil I would expect the level on the stick to be just at Max.

I know over max is wrong, but just want to be sure I have it correct.

I have a Porsche Boxster (slower than the Skoda...) and that has to be 1/2 level to min/max and hot and engine @ tick-over, (no dip stick, just dash computer read-out, nasty).

Too full and smoke everywhere. Really really nasty!

Thank you for your post. Has answered all my questions in one go.

The actual brand of the oil is completely irrelevant - any oil compliant with the required standard, provided it comes from a reliable supplier, is suitable.

High priced oil does not necessarily mean it is better than a lower-priced one.

Skoda UK cars had Castrol as the recommended oil, free bottles in car.

Dealers used Castrol or Quantum.

Now no mater, Mobile, Shell, Tesco, Asda, Comma etc etc, but need to be to the Spec, some will say, on the APPROVED LIST.

Now Quantum is from Fuchs Oils and TPS supplies and Dealerships use it.

The imported bit is VW Approved to VW504 00 / 507 00, & 0w 30 FS III, Long life and can be used Fixed or Variable servicing.

VW502 00, so 0w 40 FS (not long life) can be used for fixed. But they do not tell you that.

@911hillclimber If checking cold & think that is all in the sump then great. Your theory is OK.

So now maybe check as the Manufacturer recommends, shows, and compare.

Then you will know where it should be cold before trips.

BY HAVING THE CORRECT OIL LEVEL WHEN AT OPERATING TEMPERATURE SINCE THAT IS HOW AN ENGINE DRIVES. NOT SITTING UNSTARTED & COLD.

Only 1.2 44 kW petrols with only 2.8 litre capacity are to be checked cold.

Wait, you have an oil dipstick and not a sensor? 2.0 TSI 265hp EA888?

Yes, that is correct.

Or at lest the dipstick is there, but I have not looked to see if a dash measurement is there via the infotainment, as I believe a dip stick!

I no not know if the engine is an EA888.

Car was registered in late Nov 2023, but 280 bhp, Sport Line Plus Estate 4x4. S-A
