1.6 8v Tuning

Featured Replies

Hi GUys,

Is there any common parts out there for the 1.6 8v 102BHP engine. Iv'e only had it a week and I feel the need for some mods comming on:) Is this engine the same as the one in the Golf MK4, because I'm guessing it's old but I don't know what other cars it's been in? AMD Can remap it for 10BHP, but If this engine has been around for a while are there any performance parts readily avaliable, for small gains of course:rolleyes:

I believe it first appeared (in one form) in the Golf GTi Mk1 back in 1979 - so GTi tuning parts should be readily available...cams, induction, exhaust and I believe even supercharger kits.

It'll probably work out prohibitively expensive to tune it for the gains you'll see though.

Your kidding me right:eek: Somewhere, Somehow that engine goes back to 1979?, The Time of ABBA. Nice to know that because of that there will be some parts around, but 1979:eek:

Pretty much, yeah...but I think you'd be surprised at how old some engine designs actually are... :)

I'd have thought there might be some changes to things like the embedded electronics and that, but not 100% sure on that one...

Rob.

I thought that engine was sleeved-down version of the 1.8 20v engine with a 6v head fitted to it? It's even got a variable length intake manifold :) (I think)

My old Felicia also had a 1.6 8v VW engine but it was totally different to the 102BHP one in the Octavia. Maybe this is the one that dates back to 1979?

That might be good if it's true, Theres loads of part for the 1.8T:cool:

Could you remove the sleeves and fit new pistons to get a 1.8 6v? ;)

Not as far as I know...I know the 1.8T uses coilpacks, which the 1.6 8v doesn't. As far as I know, the engine went from being a 1.6 8v in the Mk1 GTi and has been progressively bored out to make the 2.0 8v in the Mk4 GTI. Which, IIRC, is the same unit as features in the 2.0 8v Fabia and Octavia.

Was the 1.6 8v unit in the Felicia fuel injected?

Yes, All Felicias were Fuel injected. Hopefully either way there will be some parts:thumbup:

What are coilpacks though?

What are coilpacks though?

Do a search on here and there should be quite a few topics on them (particularly their failure). ;)

They are just used to distribute the spark to the plugs, rather than using distributor caps...

Rob.

Wow, and the 1.6 8v Octavia doesn't have one?

Even my mums Felicia 1.3MPI had a distributorless ignition system.

What I was saying in my unique shorthand ambiguous way, is it doesn't use the same coilpacks as the 1.8T...I'd be surprised if it uses a distributor... :)

I got this off wikipedia

102 hp 1.6

configuration

1595 cm

Wether it dates back to 1979 or not, I bet it is still better than the 1.4 16v. Just be thanful you didn't get that engine. Many engine designs can trace their routes back for years.

Not really concerned how old the design is, I beleive the 1.3 in the Ford KA goes back to the Anglia:eek: I'm just trying to find out what car I need to be looking at for tuning parts. For a 1.6 in such a large car it's positivley sprightley , so It wont suprise me if it's a GTI engine. 0-60 in 11.9 and 118MPH isn't bad. It also has the best engine note Iv'e ever heard as I havent had a ride in an Alfa yet;)
