Parking sensors

Featured Replies

The parking sensors on my 2009 fabia 2 estate don't work. I just get beep and then a tone. I've tried the WD40 fix but to no avail.

Any got any ideas ?

Thank you everyone..

Mostly they are checked by plugging in an OBD reader to find which sensor is faulty but this can be confusing as a while ago a friend told me he had his checked and it was the right rear sensor that was faulty, that was changed but it did not cure the fault, it then turned out be be the other side so the OBD read out was working backwards in this case,

You might want to try this first before anything, it worked on a Seat Leon i owned, put the car into reverse turn the ignition on and then shut the door, go around the rear and start at one side put your index finger lightly on the centre of the sensor then move it out then back onto the sensor but try doing this at arms length so you body doesn't get in the way, you should hear a faint click from the sensor, if it does not ckick it's faulty try some more WD and hold a rag below not for it to run down the bumper, I had to replace one of mine on said Seat it entailed taking the rear bumper to get at the sensors could not get at them from underneath, I then had to cut through the old sensor bracket as it seemed to be all part of the bumper but just cut enough to remove the sensor and left the bracket part still on the bumper part once the bracket was cut the sensor pushed out, the new one was nearly £90 at the time and i had to colour match it to the bumper as it was black i used some araldite to fix the sensor back to the bracket but i see now people are using super glue and baking soda to achive a bonding glue

Thanks a lot for your reply. It's seems a hell of a lot of work. I think I'll just keep using the WD40 and if it doesn't work I'll just have to go without them.

You've also got to be open to the possibility that it is just a wiring issue, ideally this car needs scanned using a VW Group fully compliant scan tool and start from using what it thinks is wrong.

These systems tend to have only a signal/output wire, one for each of the sensors, a Ov which is a single wire coming from the controller branching out into a wire to each sensor and the same with the 12V supply.

Factory fitted parking sensors equipped bumpers tend to have mounting plates bonded/welded or sticky taped to the bumper, these mounting plates have clips that the sensor pushes into and locks in place along with, for most models, a soft sealing washer/gasket. You can buy new suitable mounting plates if you break any of them they tend to be in "flat" form for the centre located sensors and "curved" for the outer sensors, though these outers are "sided".

On the cost of buying new sensors, these sensors, and there are only a few versions across the VW Group marques, tend to have had their part numbers changed a few times over the years, if you can gain enough knowledge on that, you can usually buy genuine VW Group sensors for a lot lower price, unfortunately as usual, it can down to knowledge or willingness to learn and use it.

I started from scratch and ended up after using up quite a lot of time, being able to pick up new sensors for a project for a lot less cash than VW Group sold them for, but as usual, each to their own, how we spend our time and money is up to us.

Using or relying on parking sensors possibly reduces your driving capabilities, but I don't mind that, if it saves me touching something then that can't be bad, can it.

Thanks so much for your excellent response. I'm just going to carry on without them, it's not worth the expense or the work.

If you know which sensor has gone wrong - no clicking or via OBD scan - look on aliexpress. I paid a couple of pounds for a sensor that broke six years ago. You can use a touch up to colour match it.

My daughter could get through a gap below the rear light cluster, but it might be a bumper loose job for the inner ones.

Hi, thanks for post. None of the sensors make a clicking noise so I think it's probably the control box. Difficult job for me to do.

Try and find someone with VCDS, VCP or OBDeleven near you or, if you plan on staying with a VAG car for a while, invest in your own.
