mHEV and auto start/stop

Featured Replies

Hello everyone,

I've reading a lot about auto start/stop and I am getting more and more confused by the minute.

We have two statements:

  1. mHEV's whole point is to aid with auto start/stop etc. The components are build "tougher"

  2. Auto start/stop will prematurely wear components no matter if they are build "tougher"

Regarding statement 2 I recently watched this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qu8cJ2t_ja8

My car is mHEV DSG and I would like to own it for at least 10 years. I am not the type of person that changes cars every 3 years. I owned my last Toyota Corolla for nearly 10 years, but opted to switch to a brand new modern car.

What is your opinion/advice on the matter?

Hello, welcome to the forum.

I don't drive a mHEV, but I do use auto stop-start all the time in my 2015 Mk3 - EFB battery is more than 9 years old and there are no signs of any issues with the starter motor.

The original 2015 AGM battery was replaced, along with the alternator under warranty in 2016 due to manufacturing defects.

Hello there, I also have the mHEV version of Octavia FL 2025, eather I stop auto start/stop, the car stops the engine, so I decide to let it on auto. I will go on the first statement D cheers and drive safe!

I was just like you. I switched to a Phev in hope that it would last me for at least 5 years. Although I am at certified techie, I am already too confused and annoyed. It looks like Skoda has been experimenting on it's customers. The car is full of tech junk, that just becomes a burden. I mean, a car should fit into the requirements of the user and not the other around. I'm sure I'm one of the thousands of people who switches off the lane assist and other weird features every time you turn on the engine. Nowadays I'm driving around with a backup battery in case of that little battery runs out on me as I'm driving 40 minutes or less during the day. Not to mention that when it's in automatic hybrid mode it just drains the battery; when you turn off the automatic mode, it keeps on and off the ICE needlessly. Oh yes, not to mention that I need to switch off the radio every time I start the engine as it keeps on turning it on every time. The list just goes on and on. I've had the car for about 3 months now and I am nearly out of patience.

There is a setting for the volume at power on; mine is set very low. It’s in the ‘Sounds’ menu item.

Also, I’m pretty sure there is a setting to choose if you want audio to resume on startup - but I can’t remember where it is, sorry.

Back to auto start/stop; from what I’ve read here I’m pretty sure there is something odd with it in mHEV cars. The vast majority of (technical) complaints I recall are from mHEV owners. Frustrating!

Fortunately for me mine is a 5 year old 1.5tsi and after 67k miles auto start/stop still works fine.
