Engine noise 2.0 TDI Elegance

Featured Replies

I still haven't ordered my 2.0 TDI Elegance Hatchback (5 more months to go). Today I've seen post that car makes too much noise. I know that road noise depends a lot on tyres size, pressure and brand. But I got worried about engine noise. Right now I drive petrol car and it's quite. I know diesel is bit more noisy but is it that much? I also drive company car Renault Megane 1.5 DCi (2 months old) and I'm ok with noise it makes. If Octy has the same noise level it would be ok with me.

Please, tell me your experience. Is there anyone who drove Renault Megane mentioned above and can compare it with Octavia 2.0 TDI in metter of engine noise and aerodynamics.

Thanks

Mine isn't noisy at all.

Um, I have just change coampany cars from an '03 Leon SE 1.9 TDI to a 2.0 TDI L&K hatch.

The new 2.0 is a far quieter engine than the old 1.9.

Had to turn the Tom Tom volume down from 70 to 60 coz the car was that much quieter inside :)

That's great news.

Thanks

Why aren't you ordering for another 5 months?

Why not go and try one?

I've had 2 1.5Dci Meganes and my 2.0 TDI OctyII is definately noisier. Do bear in mind though that aside from the Honda 2.2 CTDI the 1.5 Dci is probably one of the quietest diesels out there. Incidentailly IMO these 2 engines compromise on the usual diesel qualities just to be more petrollike with regard to noise. The figures don't back this up but its my experience after driving both and comparing it to the Octy.

I've found that running it on BP Ultimate makes a huge difference and the engine quietens as the miles roll on anyway. If I use standard diesel my car can sound like a bag of spanners on startup on a real cold morning but BP Ultimate sorts that and as I say it quietens with the miles. The noise isnt really noticeable once up to speed anyway and if you push it hard the engine makes more of a manacing roar (with nice turbo noise too you can hear if the window is open) which I like anyway.

The power difference between the 2 cars is substantial. SWMBO still had a Megane when I got my Octy and driving it felt like I was pedaling it myself in comparison with the Octy.

Financial reasons, I'd like to have it tomorrow but it's just not possible

Very valuable informations.

It depends where you will be driving it most too. On the motorway you really can't hear the engine. Aerodynamically it is quiet too, with no noise from the wipers etc. Around town, I don't find it intrusive at all. It's quite throaty when you boot it, which I do a lot, just to hear the DSG changes. The biggest flea in the ear are the tyres though. Do a search to find out more.

I bet it's whole load more noisy if you try running without them :)

Tyre noise can be improved by selecting the tyres carefully.

Regards engine noise, most diesels are more noisy then most equivalent petrols, especially when cold.

Nothing some soundproofing doesn't help with though, it will mute the clatter etc quite nicely and doesn't have to cost all that much (few hundred quid including mobile fitting, you can do it for about half that if you do it yourself)

See the thread below on "Soundproofing - Any Suggestions?". Our Octy 2 is now possibly the quietest car I've owned (and that includes a MB 500SE and a BMW 730). It seems that nowadays the major source of noise is the tyres, which of course depends very much on the tyre make and the surface. But even on ridged concrete (yuch) our L&K is pretty quiet.

It shows how diesel engines have improved when most of us notice tyre noise over engine noise
