Aussie Elroq will not charge from a timer

Featured Replies

The Elroq was only released in October in AU and we bought the first one from the dealer after driving a pre release vehicle back in July

Wife's new Elroq 130 2 weeks old has an "interesting problem" Love the car but the Au importers appear to have stripped out some feature to maybe save a few $$(Of course not, would they?)

We have a 13kw solar array currently and 20kw battery bank about to be installed however currently using the supplied 2.4kw wall charger 240VAC @10A

The problem: We have been forced to have smart electrickery meter installed and we here in the Gold coast and most of SE Queensland have 4 electricity tariffs, the cheapest is from 10PM through until 08AM.

We're oldies so staying up till 10 pm is an issue as we are up typically at 5 or 6 A M, so I tried using a mains timer.

Does not charge!

Plug in supplied Skoda charger, set the timer for 10.05PM, power on.

At 10.05 the timer activates, the charger shows one LED for power but no output. The Elroq port is red.

Test: Daytime plug in and power on.... Charger cycles and begins charging, slow flash at both the charger and Elroq port. All OK.

Turn off the mains, wait 10 minutes or several hours, turn on the mains again and zero output.

So the only way to charge appears to be manually inserting the charge plug and applying power within a minute or so, and a delay stops it.

Does anyone know a way around this? Skoda Australia simply say take back to the dealer however long discussions with the dealer have given me zero hope, they have no idea and refer me back to Skoda AU.

I suspect the car is not 'waking up' after going into standby mode while waiting for the charger to start. There has been an issue with VAG EVs where the on board charger (OBC) does not wake up after standby mode, but I would have thought your Elroq is too new for that to be happening as the problem is fixed. There are plenty of discussions online about this problem and how to fix it, if you search for them.

Another thing you might want to try to rule out problems with the timer / granny charger is to remove the mains timer and use the car's built in charge timer to start charging at your desired times. This may help with the car not waking up properly too. Using the car's built in timer is electrically safer than using a mains timer. The timer can be set in the infotainment charging screen.

@Aspman might have some info on this but I suspect it's an issue with the apps not talking to eacher and the cars system properly (I think that's what the problem he had was)

Not sure, our ID3 regularly has issues. I need to speak with dealer soon.

Our issue is that the car can be plugged in, charge port = light green, it will accept charge but then if left it will randomly stop. Could be after 10min could be 10hr. Red light on charge port, but no errors anywhere.
It was working initially then VW pushed out an app update and then it started crapping out. My car no longer gives a battery reading to the app butis connected because I can lock/unlock etc. I've not reset the ICE on the car yet as I can't be bothered with the painful setup again.

The sleeping issue is well reported on VWs, so with smart chargers it relies on delivering cheap power based on network demand which can be at any time. Apparently VW cars go to sleep and won't wake up to accept charge.

I've also read about an unofficial recall on yellow power charging cables. But I've no details on that.
The port also seems to be sensitive to not being really firmly pushed in. So don't be tempted to give it a wiggle after you plug it in.

I've been advise to make sure all the apps have the same setting so if you have a charge time or % make sure everything has the same values.
We have disconnected the car from the charger (unpaired software), the car has no timer set only a percentage. The charger is set to deliver as much charge as a car will take. It still fails pretty much every day. We've resorted to parking the car so we can see the charging light. running out to reinsert the cable resets the issue.

In short VW software = garbage.

I'll try to update if I ever learn anything useful.

Sincere thanks for your replies, particularly luckypants but..........

The charge profile screen does not have the ability to specify times to charge, like many other features showcased on the Skoda factory videos like "home parking" The Aussie version does not have embedded maps so doesn't know where it is without Carplay... and that's another reeely annoying thing. Wife has had to buy a new phone as her 3 yr old Moto G82 Android v13 simply would not connect. Dealer, myself and young techie tried 20 minutes to no avail so she has had to buy a new phone which means if I drive I'm map less, cant make calls etc etc. here in Queensland if you are caught using your phone without hands free it's (today) an $1140 fine goes up regularly!

Also devoid of road signs in the HUD so if you miss a speed change sign and get a photo in the mail it's yet another fine. And "bleedin &!# Laura" is totally useless. Can't make calls, send texts or ask for directions "I'm sorry, I don't know how to do that"

Have to use the phone again.

Booked into the dealer's Wednesday, I've copied some of your comments to them and that will hopefully get something happening. Will advise

Ditto booked into dealer with mine for the 17th. They didn;t question anythign just said "needs to come in for 'investigation'.

The VW software also lacks charging time options now so it's not just in Aus.
In the VW the AI voice 'assistant' is IDA, similarly useless. In fact less than useless as it gets in the way of using the Apple Siri.

One thing to add, is your charging point up to date with its software.
Ditto your energy supplier.
We had a previosu isues where the energy supplier had push out an update to their app which screwed things up as well and we had to get them to roll that back.

Took it to the dealer, printed the above and showed it to the service manager who appeared not to know about this issue.

Wanted me to come back in the afternoon however no way was I going to do that as I wanted to be there so I waited.

One hour later. "All OK" he said "there was a fault in the high voltage charge circuit" BS!! In other words they updated the software but weren't going to admit it.

Still missing lots of features showing in their web ads but "There is an update in the pipeline this year" he said.

We wait with baited breath.....NOT.

Our ID3 went to the dealer and they found nothing in the codes in the car, so as far as they could tell there was nothing wrong. There is no deeper logging on the car which you might (I did) expect on a car that is so heavily filled wth IT kit.
What they did tell me (dealer was good actually not knocking them) was that is was a VW technical bulletin. That bulleting basically says the car is incompatible with smart charging. Their solution was to charge it at an on demand charging station as that doesn't rely on the car having to wake up. That this is 5-10x as expensive wasn't really considered in the 'solution'.

However, they did do a software update while the car was in and lo' it is much less of an issue.
It's only failed a couple of times and hasn't left us unable to use the car so far.
You might find that software update has largely fixed it.

It still refuses to release the cable regularly (3x unlock clicks fixes but a faff), the app still doesn't tell me the battery capacity of the car.
I can guess from the Ohme app now how much charge the car has taken but I have to catch it either side of midnight or it resets.

I realise I'm late to the party on this, but I have been able to get it to timer charge by using a mechanical timer (it didn't like an electronic one that I could remotely activate) **Note it only works if the timer is OFF when you first plug it in and only works ONCE.

that is, if its been charging for any time at all and the timer switches off, once the timer switches back on it doesn't start charging again
