Oil consuption on DTUA engine

Featured Replies

Our SIII 2L TDI has flicked up an oil warning light for the 2. time.

The car has done 17800M and is from 3/23. It had a service by Skoda with oil and filter change about 4000 miles back. I did check the oil and it is above minimum. It took 0.5l of oil to go back to the middle.

The 1. time I had an oil warning was at about 12000M.

My questions are -

Is this engine known for oi consumption?

Did Skoda not fill it adequately?

Is this a warranty issue?

My previous SII with the CFGB engine did not use any oil at all. And I did all my own oil changes.

Did you never check the oil from collecting after the service or in the 4,000 miles? It might well have come back to you low. 0.5 litres of oil added really meant the level was pretty low since you had a Warning Light / Yellow Oil can. If you had added no oil but had opened the bonnet the light would go out anyway for 62 miles / 100km. Best get the oil ap to the top of the Cross Hatch when the engine at operating temp and not run maybe 1 litre less than capacity.

I have the same engine in my Octavia vRS. It seems they do use oil. Mine goes down to halfway on the dipstick after 3.5k.

I have a 200PS TDI 2L from Nov.2023.

My car consistently uses 1L of oil each 7000km.

The first 3 times the dealer refilled the oil, checked there were no leaks and we were monitoring the situation.

According to them, it's within VW spec so unless it gets worse VW won't do anything.

I'm now at almost 60k km and it has stayed constant at 1L per 7000km.

Min->max on the dipstick takes just about 1L.

My 2014 Octavia TDI will do 30k km and use less than 0.75L of oil.

They suggested it's due to the change in oil from 5W30 on older engines to 0W30 on modern ones but as it's under warranty they will not allow me to change.

As it's constant I don't mind topping up regularly & bought 5L of Castrol Edge for £35 to keep it topped up between services

VW group will not even do anything if it uses 1.5 litres in 2,000 km as they say that is within tolerances. But those saying that should be asked, show what the VW tolerances are in writing and not just the Owners Manual saying 'May use 0.5 litres in 1,000 km'.

The problem I’m worried about is what the longterm effect will be on the DPF. I used the 0w30w on my last car and it didn’t burn a drop of oil in 10,000 miles.

Don’t worry about the DPF. Most if not all 0w30 oils meeting the 507.00 standard are “low-saps”.

507.00 allows up to 1.5% ash content.

If the oil also meets the ACEA C3, it means no more than 0,8% content.

Just let the DPF complete the regens, especially when the dash light is on.
