Skoda Fabia Mk4 - CORNER function

Featured Replies

Every one of the online Owner's Manuals for Fabia Mk4 models includes a short section on the "Corner function" that involves the car's fog-lights automatically illuminating when the following conditions are met.

This recent forum thread asked about turning the function OFF

https://www.briskoda.net/forums/topic/535012-disable-corneringreversing-fogs/#comment-5968119

but - as my this function evidently does not operate on 2024 Fabia - I'm more interested in turning it ON.

This video describes the function

and states that it is deactivated as standard (which seems a mite odd to me!) and will need activating (presumably by a Skoda dealership).

Is this correct, or is it just my car?

I lost heart researching cornering-lights, eventually deciding that - although my car's lighting settings could probably be 'tweaked' to enable the function (or allow its fog-light bulbs to be swapped from halogen to LED) - I really couldn't be bothered! This link seems to summarise the UK position pretty well.

Cornering Lights: A UK Driver's Guide | Willand Service C...

Demystifying cornering lights in the UK. Do they have legal standing? Explore their function, benefits, drawbacks, and whether they're a costly gimmick or a genuine safety feature for British motorist

Out of curiosity I looked at Skoda's current French Fabia catalogue to see if that mentioned cornering lights. The French Fabia range has 5 'trims' - Active/Selection/Clever Edition/Monte Carlo/130. All 5 trims have front fog-lights as standard, with the cornering-lights function as part of the front fog-lights of the Selection and Clever Edition trims. The Monte Carlo and 130 trims have (as standard) 'full LED' headlamps that integrate a cornering-lights function, but I don't know if that means their front fog-lights are just fog-lights or also act as additional cornering-lights.

The French Skoda Fabia standard specification differs noticeably from the UK's (eg. the Active trim is the only one with drum rear brakes). There are specific standard interior 'looks' for the Monte Carlo and 130 trims, plus an optional version available for the Selection and Clever Editions trims called "Interieur Dynamique" that has black seats with integrated headrests and this can be chosen too (at no extra cost) for the Monte Carlo trim and (presumably) also removes all the glitzy red bits.

I've recently enabled this fog light cornering function on our 2023 MY Colour Edition.

I used an OBD11 and it was straight forward.

I just wanted confirmation that the 'cornering lights' function (that would involve the low-level halogen fog-lights) of my 2024 Fabia Mk4 had been disabled at the Skoda factory or whether it not working was a fault - and your reply suggests that the former is the case.

The OBDeleven website advertises a One Click App for enabling the cornering lights function but the advert refers to 2021-2023 cars

https://obdeleven.com/customizations/skoda/fabia/2021-2023/cornering-lights

Coincidently, shortly after my forum postings above, I was parked in the street opposite a supermarket exit and recent-ish VW and SEAT cars turning left out of the exit all had their left low-level fog-light come on as they did so. After that, I noticed lots more cars/vans (of various makes) had this cornering-lights function operating in daylight and rapidly decided that I disliked it. Plus - given the low light output of my car's bumper-mounted halogen fog-lights - I was also doubtful that, even at night, the function would have genuine value for me.

Cornering function is very usefull, definitelly.

And, it should be work only when Low or High Beams are ON.

The operating conditions of a Fabia Mk4's Corner Function are listed in my 1st posting above.

I'm not convinced that enabling the function on my car would benefit me. The main 'selling point' seems to be the function's automation, but - as the car's headlights need to have their low beam turned on for the function to operate - there should be plenty of light in front of my car to spot any obstacles. In the unlikely event that I felt the fog-lights being on might be helpful, a quick pull on the switch would turn both of them on and a quick push would turn them back off - and I'm perfectly capable of doing that.

I've had a couple of cars including the Yeti (which had halogen fog lights/ cornering lights) and whilst they are useful for giving more illumination to objects closeby as you turn a corner as you surmise they aren't of any great benefit.

When my Fabia was in for an oil service last week I asked the receptionist whether the workshop technicians (if they had time) could comment on the the following questions.

Questions:

1. What is special about the fuses marked 40s in the dashboard fuse-box?

2. How easy should it be to remove the front-seat head restraints? I know how it should be done (by pushing a circular button hidden deep within the seat’s back rest) but I still cannot do it!

3. Is the Corner Function (that uses the front fog lights) disabled on UK-specification Fabia Mk 4 cars? My car seems to lack that feature.

4. This statement was recently made on a Skoda-related forum

Since mid-2024 Skoda have made available a software update for the Fabia Mk4.  The purpose is to remedy a fault with the PO638 throttle actuator control – range/performance. It updates the engine control module.

It is said that this is a ‘chargeable’ workshop update (not an Over-the-Air update). Is there any truth in this?

5. Does a replacement for the Fabia’s EFB starter-battery ALWAYS need to be coded even if the replacement is another EFB battery with the same size and capacity?

Unfortunately the workshop was under pressure, so answers were not forthcoming, but, when I demonstrated the headrest removal procedure to the receptionist, he said "My God, nobody would ever guess that's how to do it!"

According to the website all models are stated as currently having cornering foglights apart from the 130. This has front foglights though so probably an error not mentioning with cornering function?

My understanding (such as it is!) of the CURRENT UK-specification Fabia range is as follows:

1: All Fabias now have LED headlights.

2: 'Basic' LED headlights are fitted as standard to all current-model Fabias, except Monte Carlo and 130 models that have 'full' LED headlights as standard.

3: All current Fabias have a pair of halogen fog-lights in the lower front bumper.

4: When a Fabia has 'basic' LED headlights, the Corner Function involves a combination of those headlights and the front fog-lights. However, when a Fabia has 'full' LED headlights, the Corner Function is built into the headlight-units and the front fog-lights operate independently. (This would explain the subtle difference in the data in the Fabia configurator between the stated standard specification for Monte Carlo/130 Fabias and for the other Fabia models.)

DaveA63's February comment above "I've recently enabled this fog light cornering function on our 2023 MY Colour Edition. I used an OBD11 and it was straight forward" confirms (to me) that my 2024 Fabia SE L's Corner Function is disabled, but could be enabled. As I'd rather not have the Corner Function active, I'm not bothered - though I'm curious why Skoda would choose to advertise in my Fabia;s Owner's Manual the existence of that function and then (apparently) disable it.

The website is somewhat unclear! But just having another look the 130 has different LED headlights to the Monte Carlo - the 130 having LED headlamps with variable light distribution, darkened. As someone remarked elsewhere (may have been you Derek) it's not clear anywhere what the difference actually is between LED headlights and Full LED headlights? Though from what is said in the handbook and above about the 130 I think it is fairly safe to say that the Full LED are adaptive and the LED are fixed.

Also the Optional Light and View Plus Package which the Monte Carlo and 130 have as standard would suggest that they have cornering foglights as well and not fixed and so the function isn't dealt with by the headlamps? But it could just be that it is badly written as is often the case. My wife has this package so I will have to have a look in the dark!

Just searched and found this on the Skoda website. As I thought the Full LED are Matrix - why didn't they just call them that! Volvo's version is Pixel but I don't have them as they dropped them for awhile.

Skoda evidently uses the term "full LED" to indicate that light-units contain no traditional bulbs - hence current Fabia models have full-LED tail-lights as well as full-led headlights.

https://www.skoda-auto.com/models/layers/layers/all-new-fabia-technology

Skoda uses "BI-LED" to indicate that a headlight has a LED matrix and (as you've said) a UK-specification Fabia 130 has this type of headlight as standard, whereas it's an option on Monte-Carlo models.

I know that my Fabia does not have the LED-matrix type of headlights, have established that the Corner Function that should involve the front fog-lights (that do work) is inoperative and concluded that this is not a 'fault', just that the Corner Function is disabled on my car. As I don't want an operative Corner Function, that's fine by me....
