Power Steering Pump Noise

Featured Replies

When I start my 2006 1.4l 16v combi in the mornings I hear a sound like a hydraulic pump. There's a whining sound like a power takeoff unit. I think its the steering pump as it goes away when I turn the steering wheel to leave my parking space. I had it into the dealers the other day for some suspension work and told them about the sound. They said that they heard the sound and topped up the fluid. However, the sound is still there. I am wondering if anyone else has heard what I am referring to and/or if its normal.

Hi, I have the same "problem" with a 2006 Elegance estate: the noise starts as soon as I open the driver's door and appears to come from the right rear of the car.

I also had a "moaning" noise from the back when moving off after applying the handbrake when the car was new, but that doesn't happen now...

salamagundi,

Every time just before you start a gas furby - when you open your door - the injector pump receives a signal to send fuel to the fuel injectors - that is probably the sound you are refering to in our first part. The second part, I am assuming, probably was a brake pad harmonic caused by dust or oxidation on the brake disc. (Lummox?)

My sound is exactly like a hydraulic pump except it whines just like one on a hydraulic power takeoff unit on a lorry or tractor... Except that it goes away once I turn the wheel. I am wondering if the sound is normal or abnormal because it is not consistent.

Thanks,

NR

Sounds like the pump is just priming the system up to me. Once if has the pressure (or you turn the wheel) it usually stops.

OK, that makes sense Lummox. Thanks! Just needed to know if it fell under "normal" as I am new to Skodas.

Cheers

GlacierNR has guessed right, my Fabia has the 1.4i 16v petrol (gas) engine. Thank you all for the information.

Sometimes I think my Fabia has more intelligence than I!

Richard

Update:

Well, here's a follow up on the power steering pump sound. In the last week or 10 days the sound has been getting "worse" more of a grating whining sound to it. It still went away after about 30 seconds and only made the sound first start of the day. I was planning to take it to the dealer at the end of this week and get it checked again. Anyway, I just rolled home from work and backed the car into its parking spot. When I was halfway there the car sort of made a stuttering sound and a sort of clunking/shuddering sound twice and then I lost steering assist. It was like the motor was asking for juice that it couldn't get or jamming up on something. Then, it gave up the ghost. I now have my first dashboard light (after 3 months, argh) and no power steering.

I had also made some other posts about a month go related to suspension sounds and when the ps gave up it made those sounds.

Anyway, I hope all goes well with the dealers.

Just went down again to see if anything had changed... Lol. Car started and now there's no dash light, just a strange sound when I turn the wheel.

Does anyone know what in the world's going on?

Thanks,

NR
