UK spec S3 2016, prepping to re-reg in Spain, tail / foglight query

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I'm finally getting the work done for the Spanish ITV, to rereg in Spain.

Last summer already I did a voluntary test to avoid any later surprises, and was told the only obstacles were replacing the headlights, and changing to location of the rear foglight from right to left hand side.
From my reading here and elsewhere I was hoping the tail-light unit already contains the light strip, and it looked promising as the left side unit itself has 3 pins, but only 2 wires entering, whereas the right hand side in pic also has 3 pins, but 3 wires entering.

By comparing the location of the wires in both I believed I'd isolated that the "spare" pin on the left must be what i needed, and I wired it up today, but for the life of me, no sign of the foglight.
I'm aware the boot must be closed for it to work at all, and in the end, I even removed the left unit, and plugged it into the right-hand wires, and it still didnt light up.

Visually both units look to be wired the same, with 3 pins in the socket, connecting internally with 3 wires, but no joy...

I'm hoping someone can maybe point out something glaring obvious that I forgot, otherwise I need to go looking for a local-spec replacement.
I couldn't see any way to open the unit to look more closely

Any guidance appreciated

Yep, I followed that guide, and seems to be different behaviour on Kombi (mine) and saloons.

I experienced same as the other Kombi on page2 who did everything same but no joy

Fair enough.

p.s. mk3 Superb Wagons (3V5) and Sedans (3V3) have different tail light clusters.

So I won't b surprised if the wiring and/or coding is different.

In the meantime, I got a continental spec left side taillight module from a breaker, still needed to crosswire from the right hand side, but worked immediately.
Therefore 100% confirmed that estate + saloon rear light clusters do behave differently
