Rear brake discs specification

Featured Replies

In the next few months I need to get my rear brakes discs (and pads) replaced, and I was thinking about doing it my self to learn something new. I've done plenty of work on other things/machines I own and have most of the tools required for the job already, but I've never gotten around to doing anything on the car myself, rather leaving it to the garage to do during a service. After a recent run in with Halfrauds and generally very high labour and parts costs, I thought now would be a good time to start thinking about taking a more personal responsibility for my car maintenance.

Step one was to source some components: discs and pads. I don't know anything about where to buy actual car parts, but I found GSF car parts and Euro Car Parts; the latter of which I have at least heard of before. I put in my number plate and navigated to brake discs, but herein lies my first issue: I am being present with not 1, but 3 different options for brake disc diameter (253mm, 272mm and 310mm). I was hoping that entering my number plate would be enough to filter that choice down to 1, but alas not.

I have a Skoda Octavia Mk III facelift (SE trim) - how can I find out the correct size, preferably without going out in the rain and removing a wheel?

Would anyone be able to recommend a brand to go for and where to buy them? I usually like to get not the most expensive, but not the least expensive option; somewhere in the middle of the price:performance curve.

Thanks

I can't remember their sizes, personally I'd use any bought from a reputable seller, apart from Brembo. You may have to take off the rear calliper carrier bracket off to get the rear disc off the hub, some you do, some you don't. I did, the carrier bolts are tight & hard to access if you don't have a lift. You also need a special torx type tapered socket to take the carrier bracket bolts off, I bought a couple from my local motor factors, as they only came in twos. I found this out whilst changing my last rear set on my previous 19 plate 1.5tsi dsg se, Octavia. Plus the calliper carrier bolts need to be tightened to a specific torque. Best to have a rewind kit to rewind the rear brake piston back, too. It's a lot easier of a job if the rear disc comes off the hub without having to remove the rear brake calliper, carrier bracket, too. I'll replace my fronts next myself, the rears, I'll take to an independent garage to have replaced, as the rear calliper bracket has to come off. I'm working off my drive using axle stands & trolley jacks. Plus I'm not young, anymore.

I just found an old post of mine, this may help you-

I did the rear brake pads and discs on my 2018 1.5 TSI ACT Octavia recently. With manual handbrake so you've got to remember to take it of before you jack the car up.

It was a reasonably straight forward job - only special tool needed was a calliper rewind tool. The disc came off without removing the carrier.

As for size I took the wheel off and gave the disc a rough-ish measure -they are pretty small discs.

They were Pagid pads and discs from Halfords.

On the Octavia MK3, the 253mm rear brake discs come in two widths (51.6mm and 61.4mm). Confusingly, both rear brake discs use the same build code, ie. 1KD.

The 253mm rear brake discs with a 61.4mm width appear in the Octavia MK3 parts catalogue from the 2018 model year...so when the car was facelifted.

What size brake discs are fitted usually depends on what engine is fitted, in particular the engine power. Occasionally, the size of brake discs can also depend on whether the car is FWD or 4x4, and whether it's a petrol or diesel.

From various autodoc listings (Jurid, Ferodo, Pagid, Champion), it appears that the Octavia MK3 uses 253x10mm rear brake discs for all models with up to 150PS.
