My car's doing 74 mpg !!

Featured Replies

Yep, that's what it says. Even goes higher if I drive economically. Obviously somethings wrong.

Got an ongoing prob with EML. Codes are all pointing to o2 bank 1 ( P0135, P2243)

3 garages have said it could be the wiring or the ECU as I've had the o2 changed twice now (in case the first was faulty) Anyone else had this mpg problem and know if it's the wiring or ECU?

It's getting to a point where I can't throw anymore cash at it. Fabia 1.2 tsi 105bhp 2011. 115000 miles. Maybe it's time to get a new motor.

In the last month I've had, new wiper mechanism and motor, breather valve, air filter, spark plugs and leads, 3 new tyres and tracking, as well as the o2 sensor :-(

The chain was done at about 85,000 miles btw.

Had similar on our Roomster with same engine. Gave a different fault code as well though. After a lot of faffing about replacing things that didn't help, it turned out to be oil contamination in the wiring/connectors of the loom for the pre-cat sensor.

I'd seen it when changing sensor, but dismissed it as unlikely to cause issues (unlike water in there),;but I was dead wrong.

It's a thing, have a look:

Let me know how much you'd want for it, if you do decide to offload it.

When i pointed out the broken crankshaft breather pipe to the garage, there was a fair bit of fresh oil around that area. I wonder if its made its way down to the sensor and contaminated that? That could be the issue with the o2 as you pointed at on my last question. Cheers mate :-)

Well worth a look.

Access better from beneath, but in my experience, you can get enough space to remove undertray and get enough access to investigate with just one side (UK nearside) of the front of the car jacked up and supported safely on an axle stand. One could possibly improvise by parking with nearside wheels up on a kerb instead.

The O2 sensor on a 1.2 throwing a fault can be a bit of a bad sign, the rough path of failure is:

Timing chain tensioner fails to take up tension quickly when the engine starts.

Timing chain skips.

Generally does the exhaust valves a bit of damage so they don't seal

Shows an ECU fault from the emissions, or gradually kills the O2 sensor.

I'm wondering if the chain's skipped a bit the other way making it run lean.

Is the indicated mpg anywhere near true?

Ours wasn't, it was about 30mpg optimistic

Normally at this time of year I get 44-46 mpg, 50-51 in the summer. It's a bit of an obsession of mine.
