Morning all. Previous Superb owner, had to replace it cheaply when that failed at 270k miles. Now looking at ~2016 mk3 estates following a forced camber adjustment by a fellow road user on my rear passenger side wheel of my CMax!

What are the main things to check for on the service history for the 1.6 and 2l diesels? I have seen DSGs should have oil changes every 40k miles. Water pump and cam belts at?

Anything to specifically test for on an inspection/test drive past the usuals?

Thanks for reading! Looking forward to getting a bigger car back, missed it. Would have rather have done it on my own terms though!

I’ve got a 2016 2.0 diesel 190ps

For my 6speed dsg it’s a service every 40k miles (don’t think there’s a time interval)

Camber is now every 100 or 120k miles with no time interval, whether the pump can last that long though, who knows

As for things to look out for, only thing I can think of is usual bumps and creaks, mines still on original suspension components but it’s only done 50k miles

Some people reporting their suspension components failing much earlier

Avoid the DSG7 unless it is 100% perfect. It should seemless, if not walk away immediatly. A few DSG oil changes would also be of benefit even though they are not scheduled.

I'm sure it's obvious when it happens but what are the warning signs a the DSG boxes are starting to miss behave?

I've only ever owned manuals. The last autoboxes I drove would have been slush boxes on a land rover ~10 years ago or hire cars abroad a similar time!

I've heard they can be a bit awkward/lumpy in low speed traffic as they struggle topick a gear but I believe that's just an auto thing rather than a fault.

@WesBrooks You might of heard that about 7 speed twin dry clutch DSG,s as fitted to a 1.6TDI, the DQ200. But not necessarily the case for the many how have not such experiences. Then a Wet Clutch DSG that has Service regimes for oil and filter changes would be faulty if behaving like that.

A 1.6 7 dsp has just come up on the radar. Looking for smooth shifting and feeling like a halfway between slush box nd manual?

A DSG is called a Semi-Automatic because that is what they are. Automated Manuals. But beware of possible issues with a DQ200 DSG fitted to a 1.6 TDI CR. Even if just reversing up slopes. Do you do high miles which rules out a petrol engine?

The vehicle will be used for a mix of short hops and longer journeys. I'm scraping the bottom of the barrel of the second hand market, and already added about £2k to get us off looking at the absolute cheapest. No petrols showing up in our price range.

Read around after a search on DSG hear and I think I will have to avoid them at this price point. I fuxed serious issues with the manual box on my mk2 with change from £1k at an independant and granted about 6 yers ago. That looks like pocket change for DSG issues!

It's not so much the price of the parts, but the labour involved. I've thrown about £3k at mine so far and it's still not working correctly.

Signs to look out for are slow slippery shifting ( as though you're riding the clutch on a manual eg revs rise during shifts) particularly when warmed up, any noticeable thump between gear shifting ( it should be almost imperceptible ).

Any of the above walk away, do not pass go, do not collect £200.

Thanks very much for the input all. I considered it carefully and decided the budget wouldn't stretch far enough for a reasonable chance at a fair DSG equiped Superb.

I've took a 2.0 TDI SE Business out for a test drive today and put a deposit down within five minutes of getting back. Happy with my decision.
