Dumb Questions from a Newby!

Featured Replies

Hi,

I have two questions that don't seem to be explained very well (at least to me!) in the handbook.

(2022 Octavia SE L TSI).

  1. What will happen if I close the doors and accidentally leave the key inside the car? (Keyless KESSY).

  2. When parking the car, if the Auto-hold "A" is lit up on the electronic handbrake (ie. engaged), is it still necessary to also pull up the main lever "P"?

Thanks in advance!

  1. If you leave the Key in the car and shut the doors, nothing

  2. If you have the hill hold on, it won't do any thing as that only does anything when driving( its not a hand brake) but you do have a hand brake, but you don't need to apply it as when you stop the engine it will come on automatically, and also when you are setting off you don't need to take the hand brake off as it will disengage as you set off

My advice is don't leave the key in the car and shut the doors, I used to do it regularly, until it locked me out of the car one day and I had to find another way home to get my spare key to open it. I've heard of the same thing happening to others too.

In general you can just finish parking and turn the engine off with your foot on the brake. That will automatically shift the transmission into park and apply the handbrake.

Thanks, but would that apply to a manual model like mine? (I should have specified I got a manual box).

Yes. But…

IIRC there is a setting to auto apply the parking brake when turning off the engine.

You will see the P light up when it’s applied. (The light goes out when opening the door.)

Thank you or the helpful replies - much appreciated!

For a manual box, there should be a setting as @SteveTheElder noted. Here is the excerpt from the manual (Octavia MK4, production period 2022/06):

Starting and driving > Electric parking brake > Operation

Automatic switching on, after switching off the ignition

For vehicles with manual transmission, the parking brake is automatically switched on after switching off the ignition.

The function is deactivated or activated in the Infotainment menu as follows:

  • MENU > vehicle.png > vehicle2.png > Outside.

  • By moving your finger sideways, choose the screen with the menu item Brakes.

  • Select Brakes menu item and activate or deactivate the function.

When the auto hill handbrake comes on (green P), the rear brake lights are also kept on. When you pull the lever up for parking (red P), the rear brake lights go out.

I think it is plain courtesy to the car in the queue behind you to pull the lever up and switch the brake lights off (unless its a pr**k who has been pushing you all the time).

In both cases the brake will automatically disengage when you pull away.

If you are stopping entirely, the parking light goes from green to red when you turn the ignition off without having to lift the P lever.

a couple of days ago i put my coat in the boot and closed the boot lid and walked away. Later i realised my key was in the coat pocket. The car was in a secure car park so i hadn't tried to lock it. The car locked itself with the key in the boot so i was locked out and had to travel home to get the spare. Yesterday I purposely walked away from the car with the key in my hand, it sat there for a few hours unlocked. I'm confused and don't know why it locked the other day
