Need a good Stage 2 setup for Skoda Rapid 1.0 TSI (India)

Hi folks,

I am currently running a stage 1 tune from quantum on my skoda rapid 1.0 TSI (India) and it's been 2 years and I am really impressed with the performance. Now, I want to take it a bit further and move to a stage 2 setup. Anyone running a stage 2 remap on the same 1.0 TSI, please guide me, what kind of setups and builds will be good for daily drivability, performance and fuel economy as well when on light foot. I don't want to stress the major components of the car and I want to set the torque range within safe limits the stock hardware can handle.

Let me know what you are running on your car and your obd2 data as well.

Are you using OEM Plugs and Ignition coils, and what octane petrol? What have you used as an air filter? What gearbox has the car? Maybe look in the Fabia Mk3 section & the tuning thread. Has the person that does your remap not have advice to give you?

I am using 95 RON and everything is stock and it's a manual 6 speed gearbox with Quantum Stage 1 remap, I just want to know the builds if anyone has done stage 2 on rapid 1.0 tsi, the power outputs and all.

Stage 2 really needs you to start upgrading hardware and using Super Unleaded.

As put you may find more info in another forum(s) on this site such as the 'Project' forums of the models that use the same 1.0 TSI engine (what differences there might be with India engines I don't know.

You may already know and do what follows but many that have or want their cars tuned don't.

There is no such thing really as Stage 1, 2 or more though there might be general agreement of what they might consist of there could be different interpretations by different people and tuners and in different regions and counties.

As stated you also need to find good reliable tuners in India that know your car make, model and engine to see what they do and use and what results they usually get.

First part of any tuning is having the whole car in good working order and the whole call fully and properly serviced, maintained and repaired thoroughly and in timely manner. To have all systems, components and parts in good working order.

Most important are brakes, suspension, steering (all three include tyres), safety electrics (lights, horn, wiper, etc.) after those is transmission and engine.

Once all that is sorted you can move on to stage tuning but bear in mind as with everything on the car further tuning can/will bring further compromises, such as if tuned for top end performance you can lose some bottom and middle performance that makes less efficiency of normal everyday driving. Not all "improvements" and "upgrades" are overall improvements or improvements at all, things have to be balanced. This is why you need a good reliable tuner that knows what they are doing with your particular car make, model and engine.

Next bit many men don't like - after full and proper, thorough, timely servicing, maintenance and repair is something that is transferable to future cars, further driver training. A good driver can get more out of a standard or tuned cars.

Agree with NTA and Evolution on this.

If you just want more performance from the car, its not really going to happen with some magic remap.

Directly, any more performance-based mapping will need to take advantage of increased air flow (induction kit), cooler charge (intercooler) and potentially exhaust to assist with increased exhaust gas flow capacity.

But before all that the responsible thing to do is make sure the car is looked after well - changing the oil and service items more often; and servicing gearbox/diffs more often than advised etc.

Plus, you won't really see much from a 1.0 anyway. You'll need to be careful too, as both the MQ200 and DQ200 won't like the extra torque.

Agree with this. The engine was never for designed for that level of performance.

My honest advice would be to leave the car as it is, and wait until you have something more capable. Have you done a track day?

I have cancelled the plan of going for a stage 2 setup, stage 1 is enough for daily use. I am not the same car enthusiast now as I was before, lol

Its not to turn you off being an enthusisiast - just that you'll have limited bang for buck so might as well go for something more responsive to tuning anyway.

Yes, 1.0 TSI is a small engine, going further will put extra load on the engine and requires more maintenance than general.

The amount of service and maintenance VW recommends generally for its cars is already mimimal or not enough especially some of the time/mileage intervals for longivity of the engine and car (although the electrics and electronics will probably limit lifespan).

Enjoyment is much about attitude, if you only look for ego figures on dynos and on the dash generally you will always want more, smaller less powerful cars can be more fun (speed limits in uk are only really 60 mph anyway). Power to weight and a lighter (by modern standards anyway) can give a better impression of say speed and acceloration than a heavier more powerful car going faster amd quicker. A well handled small car is generally more inpresive than a large car going at fractions of its potential. The ego speedos in modern family cars always made me laugh.

Spend your money on further driver training and it's fully transferable plus if you go on somelike advanced driver (road) training it can sometimes be benificial for insurance premiums and perhaps some jobs.

Exactly this. Something like an EA855 (2.5 I5) isn’t necessarily designed to be more robust, but it’s designed to take high strain and be as reliable as possible. It’s not designed with economy or cost saving in mind, really.

A 1.0 is a small economy engine, so is designed to be built as cheaply as possible - if you try putting more power through it, you’ll just have issues. It’s the same with the DSG, unfortunately.

Save your money, and spend the time on something more capable!

VW don't know as much about smaller and 3-cylinder engines as the Japanese who have been making even smaller 3-cylinder engines and lighter cars. To me the VW 4-cylinder engines have always sounded a bit rough, and I'm used to 1960s and 70s BMC/BL engines, that were designed in the 50s, so to loose a cylinder and drop capacity didn't bowed well but to be fair when my wife got a VWSEAT loan car with the 1.0 3-cylinder, as new at least, it was better than I expected.

Why VW bought shares in Suzuki to get their knowledge of small capacity engines, and Fiat and Mitsubishis of turbos and superchargers. As they colaberated. The night the VW defeat device scandal broke, Suzuki bought back their final shares. With money lent by Toyota. The other small engjne experts.

They missed the bulletproof Diahatsu engines then. It was the Americians that corupted the Japanese with the dodgy Americian corporate attitudes and practices so perhaps Suzuki thought the cent-pinching VW Germans were better, and then learnt differently.

I've had two Suzuki 3-cylinder enges, a 657 cc turbo which was as sweet as a nut and the 1.0 l na version that sounded a bit rough when pushed to long journeys at 70 mph but was amazingly economical even 20+ years back.

The Diahatsu 4-cylinder, 659 cc turbo was also very sweet and robust it got the car to attain it's claimed top speed (not Uk road) and pulled from very low revs (1,000 rpm per 16 mph in top (5th) gear all without fuss.

And again to be fair the Merc 3-cylinder, 599 cc, turbo engine was sweet and robust, though ressticted to 81 or 83 mph IIRC.
