Replace space saver

Featured Replies

Hi Guys,

Any of you replaced the space saver with a full size spare wheel ? If so what size tyre and wheel combination did you choose to fit in the spare wheel well ? I assume it would have to be 18 inches to clear my 2022 VRS brakes.

Any help would be appreciated

Thanks

I'm in a mk.3, but the principle is the same. I bought a used alloy wheel matching the existing four,, as even a steel full-size attracts a 50mph limit because of changing the balance of the car.

Outside diameter will be pretty much the same otherwise your speedometer reading will be off, so most anything recommend will fit in the space.

Try one of your existing road wheels in the well.

It'll give you an idea of any difference in boot floor height due to tyre width. In my mk.3 I've got no real difference in floor height using 'standard' sizes for the car. If the floor gets lifted a bit you can just pack it accordingly.. I was going to make a wooden frame but ended up not feeling the need.

Some aftermarket 17" alloy rims won't clear the 340x30mm front brake discs, but most 17" VAG rims will.

The owner's manual doesn't list anything bigger than 17" rims for use with snow chains...so if 18" rims really were needed, Octavia MK4 owners would have to park their car on the drive and take the train everytime it snowed.

Tried to fit 225 40 18 inch wheel in spare wheel well. Might fit if I deflate it but who wants to be inflating tyres as well as changing tyres.Snow definitely not a problem in most of Australia.

Whoops I meant 225 40 19 inch wheel

Ah, yes, not so much snow there! 😀

You're on quite different size to mine.. maybe either your specific model or an Australian spec? I've got 205/55/16 for the cold season and 225/45/17 for warmer times. 0.1 inch different.

Your 225/40/19 are over an inch larger diameter, so I can imagine that being more problematic. Mind you, even a space saver has to be the same diameter or it would be like wearing only one shoe!

Space saver fits easily into wheel well. Road tyre diameter is 40mm more than space saver.Any wonder TPS goes crazy. So if I use the space saver with a different size to the other tyres (a sort of a gray area down here)I might as well use a spare tyre with a decent width. Not to mention one that had a lot more range than the 80 odd Kilometres of a space saver. Get stuck in the bush with one of those things and you are stuffed.

^^^ Does the TPMS (Tyre Pressure Monitor System) actually go mad when the tyre of a different circumference is fitted and the TPMS reset? ACC / CC might be disabled, and there can be issues with AWD,s, but is it not just the same as if tyre pressures are not all the same and you reset to what they are at?

With space saver fitted tyre pressures on TMPS could not be reset. Error message came up and icon on dashboard started to flash.
