Oil cooler

Featured Replies

Hi everyone!

I’ve been thinking about taking my TDI RS Octavia to a track day, but I know that the stock oil cooling is a critical weak point. My question is whether there is an OEM+ solution out there, like using a Crafter oil cooler, or if I should go with an external oil cooler instead. On top of that, how plug-and-play is an external oil cooler setup?

Could you just monitor oil temp on the dash display and back off a bit when it goes over say 140C.

I thought I replied to this - weird.

Speaking for the EA888, an external oil cooler is a pretty straightforward install (as aux coolers go). Offerings from Racingline, HEL, etc are virtually plug and play, with only a few holes needing drilled for mounting. For the EA288 it’s the same story AFAIK. I’ve seen good things from Darkside and Bar-Tek.

To properly monitor oil temps you’ll ideally get something like a CANchecked readout. Anything above 125C is a problem.

I’d speak to the boys at Darkside - they know their way around these engines.

140C is actually way too high for standard engine oil. By the time it hits 140C on the dash, the oil is already thinning out dangerously, losing its lubricating properties, and you risk seriously damaging the engine.

Realistically, you should start backing off much sooner—around 125-130C max.

Thanks a lot for the reply! The only reason the Crafter oil cooler idea even crossed my mind is that I happen to have one on hand. It has more fins and a larger surface area, but I was mostly curious if anyone has actually tried swapping it before or had any experience with it.

Option B will definitely be a Darkside kit for me as well. I've seen their work and it's seriously impressive.

What he said. Even on track, I wouldn’t personally want my oil temperature to exceed 115-120, ideally. Even then, I’d be changing it far more regularly. The other consideration is the DSG cooler - while the R, S3, Cupra come with one (and the Superb 280, yes @travs) anything less than that misses out. It’s another common upgrade.

My apologies - I’ve only just realised you aren’t UK based. I would still reach out to Darkside directly, as they’re still likely to offer you some help. I know a few people with tuned TDI vRS’, some of which take them on track. Let me reach out to them and see if anyone has done something with the oil cooler.

Alternatively, I know there are several diesels on the MQB Track Cars group (FB and Insta).

No worries! That would be awesome if you could ask around, real-world feedback from guys who track their TDI vRS's is exactly what I need.

I’ll also check out that MQB Track Cars group, thanks for the heads-up!

Yep. Passenger side in front of the front wheel arch.
