Phillips Rallye 100W bulbs vs Halfords generic 100W

Featured Replies

One pure and simple question:-

anyone had any experience with the generic Halfords 100W main beam bulbs (H3 format) ?

At

I had some of Halfords +50% xenon bulbs in my last Fabia and was very pleased with them. Good value too.

I didnt realise halfords did 100w bulbs too. Might go and have a look!

I would be a bit worried about putting in 100w bulbs on mine though - do they get much warmer than 55w? Those xenon units wouldnt be cheap to replace :(

I was thinking of just putting in the +50% H3s.

They will generate almost twice the heat of 55W bulbs. For a simple comparison, try switching off and then removing a 60W then a 100W household bulb. The pain difference is very noticeable.

The phillips are simply out standing!!!! When I was going up the M40 this am in the oh my god its early hours this am someone flashed their fog lamps as they thought I had my lamps on high beam as they are osram silver stars! SO BEAMED THEM UP WITH MY PHILIPS 100W MAIN BEAM!!!! They twitched all over their lane!!! LOL :cop1:

If we all play this game there will be carnage on our roads - and we don't want that, do we? :nono:

Oh yes we do! :D

Andy, I hope you teach all your students that this is the correct response to being flashed ;)

And supposing they'd twitched into the central reservation and killed themselves - wouldn't be so funny then would it?

They were flashing their lights at you as they found your headlights dazzling, and then you dazzled them some more as a result of it - there is clearly a paragraph in the highway code about it being an offense to cause discomfort to other road users by improper use of lights, and I'm a little surprised an ADI would behave like this!

Rob.

fitted the osram silver star today. they do give off much better light without dazzle. i also put 100w from halfords in the main beam not too impressed by these. tried them on a dark country lane and they wasn't that much better than dipped! :D

We are taking about a twitch! Not a fun blown lane change!!!! The silver stars are bright, seriously bright but not blinding and often confused for full beam! One of my biggest gripes is people who leave fog lamps on or flash them when they is really no need! It was a flash of less than 1 sec and like I said they twitched!!!

Hmm...appears to be some contradiction here...

Rob.

Rob, they have a very white light which has a long reach and wide spread, also on the fabia the clear lamps (as per a lot of cars with style) can appear to dazzle but you dont get the red spot on your eyes when you close them! Surely the fact that you now can see so much further, in a complete 180 degree arc is actually a safer thing and I agree as long as you do not dazzle other drivers.Seriously find a car with correct alignment, mine is checked at every service, and fit them!

I have also bought some phillips rallye H3 100w for my FULL beam and i also have the osram bulbs, these lights are amazing,

Ive driven from Manchester to Sheffield over snake pass, and i regulary get flashed by people thinking ive got full beam on, its really annoying and when i "BEAM them up" with the rallye bulbs im sure they are left blind and thinking "i wont be flashing anyone again for no reason" the stupid BMW drivers they mostly are.

Im going to buy some Phillips Rallye H4 90/100w bulbs for my normal/dipped beam they should be good.

Plus it depends, if the lights are brigher by standard, some numptys tend to look towards them as a curious reaction (not seen anything on a car so bright before) thus blinding themselves - their own fault really :)

These sound like just the ticket! After being reduced from xenons to standard halogens.

Where is the best place to buy these bulbs? (oh and as I'm lazy does anyone have the part numbers for the silver star bulbs and the 100w ones) Presumably one is dipped and the other main beam? Is there a side light bulb too on the fabia? (Vrs is it makes a difference?)

Thanks in advance

People flash because with these high power bulbs the dipped lights are too bright. It is my understanding that 100W bulbs are illegal to use of the road, so wise up and stop thinking 'i wont be flashed again for no reason' there is a reason.

its really annoying...

You said it, buster! How inconsiderate of them to alert you to the fact that you are blinding them :(

im sure they are left blind and thinking "i wont be flashing anyone again for no reason" the stupid BMW drivers they mostly are.

Or perhaps they're left wondering what illegal bulbs you've fitted to your car such that it dazzles them on both dipped AND main beam, and trying to get your registration so they can report you for misaligned, or illegal lamps.

It's not unique to BMW drivers to find incorrectly adjusted or over bright headlamps dazzling, it's natural to any driver. What do you do when you, in turn, get dazzled by someone coming the other way?

I had a set of Halogen +50% bulbs in my MK3 golf, and they made a huge difference  . Would changing the bulbs in my 2003 Octavia really make a big difference?

Halogen or Xenon?

whats the difference?,

whats the cost?,

and can i replace the standard bulbs with either of these??

Your advice would be appreciated,

Cheers

JD

You can't easily upgrade to Xenon. There is a retro-fit option but you're talking hundreds of pounds for the conversion, and hundreds of pounds if you subsequently break a headlight.

There are a number of enhanced Halogen lamps available. Take a look at www.powerbulbs.com - recommended ones in the past have included Philips BlueVision, Osram Silverstars and some others. Jon (TaviaRS) did an objective comparison some time ago. If you're not concerned about legality issues, the Philips Rallye bulbs are very bright. More info can be found in the "what mods are worth doing" thread here

Ok thats get a few facts straight on this one.....

My dipped beam are legal as they are rated at 55w, regardless of the 50% brighter, and have the alignment checked on average every 4 months plus I always run with the adjuster on 1. Yes they are bright but in my opinion not blinding. How do i know this? But because when the wife who has the same setup comes towards me its not blinding. Yes its bright..... Fitting anything over 55w for dipped beam is ILLEGAL and should be avoided for the sake of other drivers. Now lets be honest main beam should never be used for more than a nano-second if there are other drivers around, ie so say sorry mate the dipped are just bright this is called super bright! Again the bulb must only be rated at 55w for road use. Personally I use 100w mains simply to helpout when teaching and I do a lot of night driving, they are always used with caution........

I have Silverstar bulbs too - I'm not claiming to be whiter than white in that respect. But if somebody flashes me when I'm on dipped beam I think it's best not to blind them any more just to show I can. I don't think bulbs rated at 55W should blind people on dipped beam unless they're ill adjusted. That's the point of the dipped beam pattern. Some bulbs do have poor pattern definition though.

Nick know what you mean about ill adjusted and The fabia has a very big and even spread so can see why people flash. The flashes I mostly turn a blind eye to, the only ones I dont are the ones who turn the main beam on and then leave it on! Personally I find xenons way more distracting then mine.

Im not trying to annoy anybody with these posts - but i can see that ive touched upon a sore point with some people,

The BOTTOM LINE is: if you flash me i flash u back.

When i drive along the country lanes, (cheshire, derbyshire, buxton)ish

and i have my FULL beam on i can see other cars full beams also on, and when i do i knock my lights onto the normal dipped beam, but when other drivers fail to see my 400w's of daylight beaming out of the headlights as they approach a corner, The "****s" leave them on, its these guys who get beamed up.

If your driving on a bendy country lane at night and you cant see headlights approaching the same bend as you are also approching then you shouldnt be on the road.

Oi! Discuss it over here - this thread is for discussing light performance, *not* light policies.

And it's also not the place to start offering each other outside.
