Need help re Golf measurements

Featured Replies

I currently have a 1998 VW Golf and looking to get a slightly bigger car. Looking to replace it with something that has more legroom front and back and more luggage room. Ones we are considering are Skoda Roomster, SEAT Altea, Toyota Verso. (Any opinions on these cars would also be great?) Might have a look at Vauxhall Zafira too but too common!

Anyway being a bit sad I thought I would do a wee spreadsheet comparing them all especially for the legroom/kneeroom. Got the measurements from the WhatCar website for the Golf Front legroom 1130 mm Rear kneeroom 845mm. However after starting my comparison these figures just don't seem to add up. For instance none of the 3 cars have as much legroom in front and only the Roomster has marginally more legroom in back 33mm.

This seems weird as checked out Toyota Verso and defnitely seems bigger and even a brand new Golf has less legroom 1075mm kneeroom 685mm despite being slightly longer and wider.

I know the answer would be to measure it myself but want to make sure I am comparing like to like so how would you do that?

Thanks for reading.

I would suggest measurements would be useless. Only actually trying each car with the front seats where they would normally be for you and then trying the rear for room would be the way to test. Legroom will alter depending on seat height and angle, seat length (affecting thigh support) as well as seat back angle.

You also have to consider dash style and layout as this could impact on leg positions or angle.

No, I would suggest only physical trying of each of your selected short list to be the way forward.

I think you are right was looking to narrow it down a bit from the original list of possibilities but now it is essentially down to 3 it should be a bit easier. Just testing it is fun with kids helping!

I've had a mk4 Golf (and a Leon Cupra) and now have a mk5 Golf.

The mk5 is definately significantly bigger inside than the mk4.

Somewhere on here if you do a search there was a thread when I was looking to buy my vRS Fabia where GreyBeard and myself were comparing actual internal dimentions using a tape measure! Seemed amusing at the time at least! And for the record the Fabia has very similar internal dimentions to the mk4 Golf. The Fabia mainly feels narrower between the windscreen pillars and obviously the boot is quite a bit smaller.

The mk5 Golf shared platforms though are much bigger internally (and externally), no doubt about that.

Thanks will have a hunt for that thread!
