Spark plug torque?

Featured Replies

Evening, Just changed the plugs on my vRS thisevening and according to the NGK site they should be torqued up to around 11nm. Is this correct? Didn't seem very tight. Runs ok though.

Thanks

Phil

 :P

11nM is just a little bit more than finger tight- that's a really bad way of explaining it isn't it!!!!!!!!!

it depends on wether they have a tapered on radius seat on them, noramllt new spark plugs need to be screwed in by hand untill they stop. then turn them in about another 90-180degrees (depending on manufacturer, it's also a good idea to use a little anti-sieze grease on them too.

Thanks, I put some copper grease on the threads. I used a torque wrench to get them to 11nm but it just didn't seem very tight

that's the touble with using a torque wrench to do somthing up with. because they are nomally quite long you get more leverage and somtimes the thing you are doing up is a lot tighter than it feels. you must have a decent torque wrench then also because most of them dont go down to 11nm unless they are really expensive ones.

what was the part number of the plugs you fitted? did they specify an angular tightnening stage after setting with atorque wrench??

I bought a torque wrench especially! It goes down to 8nm and cost £80 :(

The plugs are NGK PFR6Q's. There is no torque info on the packet for them. I have ordered a Haynes manual but it hasn't arrived yet.

Thanks for the help,

Phil.

the ngk PFR6Q plug is the platinum version of the BKR6ES. my tech data is saying finger tight then 1/2 to 3/4 of a turn, but the website is saying somthing totally different. its anybody guess then!!!!

Hi Guys

I am looking to replace my Spark Plugs soon as they have been in for 33k miles. Had a look under the bonnet and had trouble locating them. Eventaully found them in some B***** awkward position at the front of the engine.

How do I remove these as the access is very difficult - any ideas?

many thanks

yes, they are a total sod to get out without removing the upper half of the intake manifold. but if you use an extension with a u/j on both ends then you can just get them out, but if they are really tight leav them because you'll end up stripping the threads out of the head.

Phil,

Don't fret mate, just wack- em - in tilll it feels right.

Do like you've done B4, no prob's!

Wacky note here ,,,,, do you have the torque wrench to hand when you have a flat tyre or replace a lamp?
