VW Golf GT

Had a drive in one of these at lunch time  :D :D :D:thumbup:

This has the 170BHP diesel engine, if you havent driven this yet, you are in for a treat. The engine feels like a petrol, except for the Torque/Power as ut delivers from 1800 RPM up to the red line @ 4500 RPM there appears to be no drop off over 4K RPM as with some diesel engines.

3rd & 4th & 5th gear pull is incredible, it just pulls like a train, Hills dont exist :).

6th gear @ 3K RPM is approx 10mph quicker than the Fuby & the Golf 140BHP.

If this engine goes into the new Furby  , I know my next car :D

Only one word of caution - GET A SATNAV WITH THE SPEED CAMERA LOCATIONS , you 'll need it, this engine is far too easy to forget what speed you're doing.

My impressions of the Golf GT ----->

Clutch - was a doddle to use, very low bite point tho .

Gear change- very slightly notchy ( prob cos new ).

Steering - a lot lighter that the Golf and Octy 140 diesels, more responsive.

Suspension - not as soft as the Octy, or as hard as the Golf 140.

I love my furby as it is a pleasure and can be a hoot, the Golf despite its size I.M H.O. is about the same, put this 170 into the new furby and it raises the bar.

A diesel that drives like a petrol.

YES like the engine, but wouldnt pay VW prices.

:) Feel free to disagreewith me, I dont care :P I LIKED IT

Saw one yesterday & it looked quite nice.

Wouldn't mind having a test drive myself.

How does it compare to the petrol GTi and what sort of mpg were you getting cruising and on a blat? :D

Chris

I've driven the Golf GT PD140 a few times and stalled because I wasn't paying attention to the clutch biting point.

Completely agree with the comment on VW prices, I couldn't justify spending that but I'd have no qualms about owning one. Driver's seat is a nice place to be!

Havent driven the MkV GTi,( not convinced by any other after spending time in my friends Mk1 GTi when it 1st came out)

Driving @ petrol rates of speed the MPG was approx 40.

Does that help ? :)

I've driven the 1.4 TSFSI Golf GT

Build quality in the Golf is great and the ride fantastic. I was a little disapointed with the engine but perhaps I expected too much

Hopefully the Octy 170tdi will retain the same gear ratios... i really like the ratios in my "leggy" fabia gearbox, which allows for nice cruising mpg and little noise ;)

They won't put the 170 PD in the 'New' Fabia, that's destined for the Octavia vRS. My bet is the 2.0 140 PD

Agree with that, and/or this new 1.4 Turbo'd jobbie

I agree however don't be surprised to see the 1.8T 150.

I just dont think the Fabia vRS will get a petrol engine...

its kinda in its "niche" with it being a diesel only ... put a petrol engine in.. and itll get torn apart by the modern hot-hatch competition.. all the reviews ive seen of the ibiza cupra/fr say if you must buy one... get the diesel!

They've just stuck a 150 in the Polo though haven't they?

Yeah but a 150 has been in the Ibiza for ages, still didnt prompt Skoda to do so.

Putting the diesel in the Fabia with a sporty package made the perfect car for me.

.....................and the insurance costs and mpg AND the residuals:thumbup:

Hi

I've driven the GT 170 - I was expecting quite a lot but left dissapointed. The engine is very powerful but the one I drove had massive turbo lag and the power delivery was all or nothing. The suspension seemed very soft - the ride was great but it didn't like being hustled along at all. The A3 I drove with the same engine was much more progressive but maybe not as quick and definitely handled better. You can see where the money goes with the Audi but agree it's not so easy with the Golf.

Just my opinion

Richard

What we all want to know... is the tunability of the 170tdi... can it break the 200bhp barrier? :D

I guess it would not be easy to tune the twincharger, unless they replaced the pulley on the supercharger at the same time as the remap.

The 1.9 can in both the Octy (so I'm told by my friend) and it does in the Golf. Don't see why the 2.0 170 couldn't....

are we talking the SDi model here, or the more common tdi130 ;)

I think he has a PD130. He says that Mike at Jabba was explaining that it is something to do with exhaust routings and restrictions.....
