One alloy "scarred"

Featured Replies

Well - I went to wash the car today in prep for tomorrow, and as normal I did all four wheels. I'd done three and then went around to the back right, which was the brake we had fun taking to bits when we were changing the pads and discs a couple of days back. I went to rub the muck on the alloy and it wouldn't shift. I rubbed harder, it wouldn't shift!

It appears something, as a result of the lack of pad on the brakes, has spattered something all over the inside of the alloy, like a fine black tar but worse, and it's glued itself to my wheel. As a last resort I jacked up the car and removed this alloy to do a "proper job" on it. Got a bottle of white spirit and spent a good 40 minutes rubbing the affected areas with a cloth and the chemical. :eye-poppi

After a moment of rubbing with a cloth the majority of the "burned" looking areas had come clean (at least as clean as it was before) but in the corners where the spokes meet the rim there is still marks I cannot shift with anything... People coming tomorrow may suggest some better treatment (is that in your box of tricks, Jon? :D)

Anyway - I'm pi55ed off with myself that me not noticing the pad problem on the back has wounded one of my wheels.

BTW - before someone asks. Yes, I put the wheel back on right, and torque'd each bolt to the correct level (i.e as tight as I can physically tighten them with my wrench. :D) I don't think I'm in danger of a three-wheeling moment tomorrow.

Sorry to hear that mate. At least most of it came off. Probably not noticable to a general passer by. Hope you have fun tomorrow. Wish I could have made it! :(
