Flakie Brake Pads?

Ive got a fabia vrs and I noticed when washing it yesterday that the green paint is coming off the rear brake pads leaving a sort of a shiny metal effect underneath, it looks like its flaking off in a certain way.

Whats worrying me is that I could be causing the problem myself because I only wash it at my place of work with a pressure washer and of course i use it on the wheels to clean them out and Im worried that the pressure washers sprayed the paint off of the rear pads, but I do the same to the front wheels and pads and they are absolutely fine.

My main concern is have i damaged the pads and will they start to rust? or is it just general wear and tear and I shouldnt be too worried about it?

The cars only 7 months old, any help would be greatly appreciated

I guess you're talking about the calipers, and not the pads?

I wouldn't worry too much about rust - it would have to be years before it had any effect.

But if the paint is coming off, that's not normal. I've found the paint on my pads to be rather resistant - even though they've been repainted in red.

I'd speak to the dealer about it and see what he says. The only big concern people have had about the rear brakes is the groan when reversing, but I've never heard of flaky paint problems. No doubt others will come along and comment :thumbup:

Its interesting you mentioned the groaning noise coming from the rear brakes, my cars been back to the dealer twice for the that particular problem and its never really been cured, ive been living with it ever since ive had the car.

The dealers excuse is that it could be an excessive build up of brake dust and dirt and apparently they have cleaned and polished my brakes twice, but that doesnt stop the noise coming back:mad:!. They say they dont know what truly causes it, and im not going to keep sending the car back to them if they are just going to keep removing and cleaning the brakes.

So you could say i have lost confidence in my local dealer, i am looking at going elsewhere but there arent that many around where I live unfortunately.

Maybe your skoda dealer damaged the caliper paint keep taking them off. ;)

if you are using a pressure washer it's bound to take the paint off! dont spray the pressure washer onto the tyres either because it can damage them.

whilst checking the rear brakes on my VRS today the paint started to come off the n/s caliper , i think hammerite do a paint which is a similar colour , so i will touch up the caliper paint when i get time

pressure washer damaging factory paint at only 7 months old? i doubt it, sounds more like a fault with the painting to me. the paint should only flake off if it was previously chipped and left to let rust build up underneath really.

The calipers arent painted in the same manner a body is though.

that i understand but surely it should be of a good quality?

they aren't primed or laquered like body panels are. besides they can get very hot too.

if you do use hammerite keep it away from the brake pads/discs/hoses.

It doesn't say anywhere in the warrenty that the calipers aren't covered or how many coats of paint there must be for it to be covered... as for them getting hot it will be high temperature paint' date=' if it can't take the heat then its a manufacturing defect.

From past experience Paint warranties cover all painted surfaces.... doesn't matter anyway, if the paint is flaking off and it isn't due to a modification or mistreatment then its a manufacturering defect. If skoda choose to paint the calipers and then the paint falls off, the fact that its single coat or the brakes get hot is irrelevant as they should have used a paint capable of the heat. Most (if not all) car manufacturers use single coat paints on some parts of their cars and these are no less durable than multi coat paints.

At 7 months old the dealer will sort it regardless of what the book says. Drop it in and they'll sort it :thumbup:
