Kwik Spit Mot update

Featured Replies

Hi all

Well had my Kwik Spit Mot today, and it was OK

Furby passed, but cert had advisory notice on for tyres, I knew I needed

tyres shortly, that's why I was asking about blackcircles.com in other threads

But at 5mm it should not have been a problem as I believed 1.6mm to be the

legal requirement

Anyway Furby passed and the manager was adamant I needed the tyres NOW

I asked prices and got a quote, then I advised I was getting x tyres at x price

Long story short he met the price and had them fitted in the half hour wait

So all in all pretty fair, only thing is I reckon I could have got an extra 5k miles out

of my originals and saved a couple of months

Next problem is My old MOT was dated the 13th SEP and today was the 12 Aug

so could not post date MOT lost a month

DVLA I have a tax disc blue with SEP06 on it, received a V11D today saying must tax from 31-08-2006 I thought the tax expired the last day of the month displayed on the disc?

ie 30 SEP 2006 Oh well lost a month MOT and a Month Tax ICBW I am happy I am all legal and on the road again, just a bit miffed that I think somewhere along the line I have been done

it's normal for a mot tester to give an advisory notice if the tyres have anything less than 6mm tread left on them.

Each to their own but personally I wouldn't change tyres at anything above 3mm. You are just throwing money away otherwise.

Same here...

It's 1.6mm across 3/4 of the width of the tyre iirc, so it may be possible that they didn't meet this. I wouldn't change them with 5mm on though - they're just run in then ;)

If the tyre tread is under 1.6mm in one part of the tryre and 5mm in another surely the tracking is a light year out to cause that kind of wear !!! At least this is my understanding.

I would never trust my car in the hands of the Company mentioned along with others. In my view they have Fitted you up, but no real supprise with them.

I would have said, "Ok, I will take your advisory, have a nice day" after all if you could have got 5,000 miles I would have ran them for 4,000 and then got the tyre's most desired :D

Just my oppinion.... sorry if it offends, I kinda say what I think, get me in abit of trouble... lol

Q

Hi

Were your tyres badly worn in one area, say on the edges? At 5mm a tyre should be perfectly servicable, but if worn excessively on the dges (underinflation) or the middle (overinflation) would possibly require replacement.

My Conti Spotrt Contact II have just got down to 3mm and are now less than effective at high speed in standing water. Still good in normal driving, but I need to change them. Generally, 3mm is regarded as the least tread you should have for wet weather driving. The legal requirement of 1.6mm on the cantral 3/4 of the tread is bloody lethal.

My tyres were "perfect" just down to 5mm

I was not bullied just weak willed

I was seeking to change them anyway, just maybe a month later for finacial reasons, as I like to have pretty good tyres, but felt quite safe as I just dawdle up and down to work 30 miles, and as it is a single lane road never exceed 60mph apart from when I got 3 points for 82 last month (overtaking an old bat that was doing 40 until a car approached or a bend then down to 30, when the straight appeared up to 65 at the only passing place, I missed the first pass then on the second I thought sod it booted to get past just infront of the white van behind the tree  ) never did me for wrong side of the road though :)

I was unaware of the 6mm rule (Ignorance is Bliss)

I took the offer to save pixxxng messing about next month

Anyway all sorted now, just the 40k svc at star performance next month :)

Seems to be the way, especially with European tyres such as Contis. Germany and possibly other EU countries set their minimum tread depth at 3mm. Which is why when you get below that with them, they're noticeably worse. No point making them effective below 3mm if they're going to be scrapped!

IMO, the min here should be 3mm, especially after seeing that 5th Gear footage the other week
