VW group knobs

Featured Replies

Having discovered that none of the generic gear knobs available to purchase at Halfords will fit over the 20mm diameter reverse select mechanism on my Octy (all these knobs have 15 mm holes for fitting unto stick), does anyone know if there is a fancy chrome or brushed aluminium knob used on any VW group car with the same type of stick as the Octy that could be ordered and fitted?

The boggo standard Momo one fitted fine on my Octavia

Yes I noted your previous post. I actually took a pair of calipers with me to Halfords and having measured the diameter of the stick at 20.06 mm, I then opened the boxes of 3 different Momo knobs and measured the diameter of the hole at 15 mm, which is just the same as it was on the Rip Speed knob that my wife had bought me for christmas. This would fit on the inner metal core of the lever but not over the plastic outer layer which moves downwards, and which I assume is the mechanism for selecting reverse. My Octy is a 99, so perhaps if yours is the later face lift, the lever is smaller in diameter.

Sounds like they've changed the mechanism for selecting revers. On mine the whole selector goes down, not just a bit at the top.

My apologies, I didn't realise they'd done that.

mine is a 99 too and a 1.6 there is different gearbox shaft (?) sizes that the knob goes onto for different engine sizes (different internals?) So basically any 1.6 of that vintage made by VAG group should fit, try the Bora one it is very nice.
