i dont like the idea of buying stuff from america though. i need to find a supplier in the uk if possible

You will be lucky to find it here if you can't supply.

You might find a company that will import bits for a mark up, either that or if you know anyone who works for a company with an account with them.

Tom you can find the equivalent Triac at Cricklewood Electronics............Item no 15809

thankyou very much for that. i've allready looked at the b-series equivilent component, i have considered using them but i'm unsure if these will work in the required way because they (from the datasheet from philips-semiconductors) only require half of the gate current of the a series compont so. this may require further modifications to the circuitry for correct operation.
