PD170 Driven

Featured Replies

Just been reading a few post on the new Vrs PD170..Though id let you know that ive driven this engine in the new Leon FR and Altea FR...I must admit the Altea 170 didnt seem that much quicker than a Altea 140 DSG..but had a little bit extra top end ! I actually broke something on it , as i turn the traction off and pulled away quite quickly from a junction as the wheel was already turned...so it reved very quckly to over the red line before i new what was going on...much like my old superchipped fabia vrs. Anyway a engine warnign light came on advising to see 'The Workshop ' They still havent fixed it 3 weeks on oooops !

Ive have driven the Leon FR PD170 and that felt much quicker due to the lower kerb weight.. Mid range was very good...but the power drops off quickly as most deisels do...So although it does feel quick on the move ..its only quick for that short burst in the rev range. I have owned the cars with the PD130 PD150 and PD160 and also driven numerous PD140 and PD170s ..out of all them i must say the quickest bar far has to be the PD160 in the Ibiza Cupra TDI i had, it just seemed to be the quickest in every situation..i know it weighs less than the Octy but reckon that engine would be quicker in the Leon and Octy than the 170PD...Ive also driven the petrol Octy VRS 200PS and rekcon in normal driving and short mid range bursts than there is not much between the petrol and deisel..

Good review. Makes interesting reading.

There's a lot of hype about the 170 and I will have to give one a go in the Octy on a test drive to satisfy my curiousity. However if reports on cars using this engine in VW Golfs etc and Seats are anything to go by, i'll not be missing out on much with my 140.
