740 Miles From A Tank???

Featured Replies

what a sad life some people lead, life is about living not watching every penny.

Its not saving money... And how much fun or 'living' as you so eloquently put it can you have on a bloody motorway? Theres no difference going 70/80/90 as traffic etc will get you to the destination at the same time. It is also something to do when on a long trip, a competition for yourself.

Others probably dont think or check mpg as they would hate to know the truth...

i know the truth of mine and although when low on both cash and petrol i drive like a fabia owner it bores the **** out of me and have fun again when i get paid :)

i am currently on 330 miles from £70 of petrol and loving it :D

23 mpg thats fun :P

Sorry but these range figures have to be inflated. I recently brimmed up my tank on my drive through France (at night) 70mph virtually all the way down to Bordeaux' date=' no traffic, [b']cruise used 80% of the time[/b] and my max range was 520. Plus their motorway's are far better than ours

I cannot see how 620-700 is possible. In terms of MPG for those that have diesel car's we all like to rub in the MPG figures and inflate them so the Petrol users feel jealous, I should know I've done it myself.

I've highlighted in bold why your mpg suffered, it does make quite a difference.

I've had mine now for a grand total of 9 days and I've done 860 miles. I have a straightforward 30 mile A-road commute to work (60 mile round trip) and I've never got less than an indicated 70mpg. Usually I see 72-74mpg.

I'm changing up from 1st to second as soon as I can, then from 2nd to 3rd at 30MPH, then up to 4th at 40MPH and 5th at 50MPH then into 6th at 60MPH. That keeps the engine always at least at about 1900RPM.

I brimmed the tank for the second time tonight having used 75l of diesel over the 860 miles. By my calculations - that is 16.51 gallons which translates into a genuine 52.1MPG.

OK - so lets assume that the supplying dealer didn't brim the tank and the last 460 miles were done on 36l of diesel - that is still only 58MPG against the trip computer saying 70MPG plus.

Don't get me wrong - I'm still delighted with 52-58MPG, but the trip computer is just nonsensical. I centainly wouldn't base my next fuel stop on it's prediction.

the average mpg includes the rediculous readings yo get when coasting etc so they can massively skew the results if a lot of coasting happensas the computer may be reading 300mpg+ for a second or so

after filling up using the vent valve in the filler neck in France on the return journey from the "Ring" i did about 8 miles to the ferry port then 209 miles from Dover to my parents house near Chepstow , averaged about 57mpg , range left on arrival 530 miles , so 530+209+8 = 747miles , but i doubt i will get anywhere near that , oh and the tank still howed full aswell :D

Interesting that you say cruise on the Fabia has heavy boots. On the 1.8T Octavia, using cruise is the easiest way to get good economy. Even on what seems to be a flat road it constantly makes adjustments and the MPG is way above what you'd get if using the throttle manually to maintain a constant speed.

but isn't that going to a skewed result by the trip computer as it will have seen miles racked up but the tank still showing full so a rediculous mpg figure?

mpg is calculated from injector cycle not fuel tank level (hence it's screwed if you change the FPR or injector size). The range is calculated from fuel tank level though so is likely to be inaccurate (on the low side) when using the vent tank.

The range prediction on our Octavia is mostly complete carp. Possibly relate dto the neelde never reaching the top even if you jam as much fuel in there as possible.

The range estimate is based on the last 50miles you did isnt it? so if youve been on the motorway going steady your likely to have had quite a high fuel economy reading which will push the range up when you fill up.

I get no more than 550 miles with a big top up and pushing the low fuel buzzer to the limit. ;) Averaging around 55mpg so with a 10 gallon tank this about right. :) I never get the chance to do 70mph constant... OK I do, but when I get that chance I usually set cruise at 85. :D

update , got back from my parents house earlier 158miles at 62 mpg , with a range left figure of 395 miles , so with the previous figures of 8 miles in France and 209 mies Dover to Chepstow that makes 158+209+8+395=770 miles to a tank , LOL

That 395 will end up as 300ish. The 300+ mile range I had leaving Germany really started diminishing as the tank began to empty nearing Dunkerque. Ended up with just 15 miles to go when we tanked up at BP when I thought I was going to make it easily. The Fabia just seems to use that last 1/4 tank really fast.

my car like every other i have owned has a random fuel gauge. uses the 1st 1/4 very slowly. on a run i have got nearly 150miles before hitting 3/4 but tend to be down to 1/4 left by 275 miles or so normally hitting empty at the 300 mark give or take depending on how i have been driving.

a trax visit sees fuel go very quickly, 1/4 in 1/4 hour easy :D

  • 2 weeks later...

well in the end i only managed 648 miles before i needed to fill up again , there was a range left figure of 30 miles though , so could of gone a bit further , filled up at Sainsburys at 92.9p per litre less the 5p off a litre voucher i had from spending over £50 in the store , so 87.9p a litre :) , put 50.4 litres in using the vent release kn0b , £44.33 to fill up :(

What's this 'vent release ****' and why would I want to push/pull/flick it?

I got 51.9MPG out of my 2.0TDi octavia this morning on the way to work, mixture of town and motorway including stuck in traffic.

I usually get a reported 50-60mpg in my PD100 Fabia estate - it varies with temperature and traffic and such. When I (occasionally) do the maths on filling up I think I usually get about 53mpg actual. On nice long motorway runs I have had actual figures of around 58mpg.

Interestingly, (or otherwise) I'm sure I've read that internal combustion engines are most efficient (in terms of fuel consumed to power delivered) when running at around 90% of their maximum output. This would suggest that accelerating briskly to the desired cruising speed is possibly more economical than pottering up slowly.

[edit] Forgot to mention - my highest ever indicated range was around 650 miles, and my highest achieved tank mileage is 540, with 30 reported left. I only fill to the first click though.

Don't forget to consider cold starts when trying to figure mileage. They can really knock the average back.

If you managed a constent 65(ish)mph without stopping, I could believe you'd get close to 700 miles.

My best tank so far was nigh on 500 miles with about 20 left according to Mr Trippy.

J.

I can manage 70+ if I'm extremely careful, but generally much easier on A-roads than it is on motorways for me. Problem is it's hilly around here and those hills to drink the juice! I drove to Disley from Macclesfield (I doubt many if any will know where I'm talking about, but it's like the C&F road but with more height gain and loss) and averaged 43mpg, if I drive the other way to Knutsford I can get into the mid 70's as it's more or less flat.

Tom, ditto mine at 70/80 ish - mid to high 50's is the order of the day, unless I have a tail wind :D. On that point, makes a huge difference. a 20mph headwind on the motorway will really suck the juice as it's got the air resistance of driving at 90mph with the progress of 70mph. Other way around, though, and it's great - 80mph with sky high mpg figures. :)

its a little kn0b which sticks out of the right hand side of the filler neck , all you do is lift it up with the pump nozzle whilst filling the car and it releases the air from the top of the tank , therefore allowing more fuel to be put in the tank with a corresponding larger charge at till  , i put 50.4 litres in last fill on a tank that is supposed to be a 45 litre tank

Ah - I thought that was a bump-stop for the fuel cap cover. ;)

i wish i got better mileage from my 1.4 16v, but for the petrol 100BHP, I usually get over 50, more like 52 on a 32 mile journey to work. Now that's not bad is it!
