underpowered VRS ?

Featured Replies

Having just got back from the "Ring" trip , my brother kept commenting over the weekend how underpowered my Fabia VRS feels in comparison to my dads VRS , both 2004 models, i noticed also ,it just doesn't have that surge of torque but i must admit i've never really felt it since i got the car over 2 years ago , the power was ok on Awesomes rollers in March 133bhp at the wheels , never had any fault codes on VAGCOM , so can anybody suggest anything i could check that may cause this lack of surge but still apparently have the power ,sticky turbo vanes? boost leak? it has pd160 intake and green filter , also pikey mods 1+2 but no remap , oh and it wouldn't go over 110mph on the straight at the "Ring" and that was downhill:(

I presume it's 133 at the fly and not the wheels, otherwise it wouldnt sound underpowered. Has your father's vRS been modified at all?

I don't know how long the straight is at the ring, but if I remember rightly, its a long way! It should be able to crack 110mph....... I'd get it checked out...

Try changing out of 4th Gear!!:D

You could spend weeks and ££'s looking for it.

Clogged EGR

Dying MAF

Dirty Air Filter

Old Oil

Dirty Fuel Filter

Poor Fuel

Adaptive ECU - Been driving like a granny?

Just checked. At the wheels. Also made 250 ftlbs.

Well Ric the lap i caught you up on and followed you for a bit your car was pulling very strongly out of the corners.

So much so my passenger commented on the fact.

Perhaps you've got used to how it pulls now, and the next step is a re-map.

I'm glad you had a great weekend at the Ring, hopefully see you for next years trip.

What were the temperatures like? When I was there at the end of July I noticed my PD130 was considerably slower than usual because of the heat (36 degrees!)

Saying that, I could still easily manage an indicated 120+ on the straight.

yeah i was thinking about a remap but that would have to go hand in hand with a new uprated clutch making the total cost about

Clogged EGR not checked , but would that cause lack of torque

Dying MAF was clean , no fault codes ,should of tried my dads MAF

Dirty Air Filter cleaned out before trip

Old Oil changed before trip ,changed again today

Dirty Fuel Filter due at 40k car done 34k

Poor Fuel used premium diesel whilst on continent

Adaptive ECU - Been driving like a granny? Yeah i do drive with a light foot but not over the last weekend , cruising speeds of 85-90mph through Belgium+Germany

temps were not too warm , i think 23c was the highest i saw , run with out fog lamp surround on O/S to get more air through SMIC , did you time a lap S13 ?

What year's your vRS? There was a batch of duff turbo bearings around 04 plate as my brother got one - He was told there had been a whole run with potentially duff bearings. No recall though :thumbdwn:

registered March 04 , what do you mean by duff turbo bearings , excess play? never get any smoke other than normal PD engine smoke

No, too little causing the turbo to never operate fully - you should be able to hear if they are duff - is your turbo more whine than chirp? (B******s if that works on a bloody forum  )

No didn't time a lap unfortunately, but I'm going back in the spring so will do then.

What kind of times were you getting in your vRS? Is it standard?

Never really noticed what noise it makes until i heard the turbo spooling up noise with the window down whilst at the Ring had always seemed quieter before i went there  is there any way of checking if the bearings are too tight rather than too loose

no way of a true 133bhp at the wheels on a standard car. that would mean an easy 160bhp fly which ain't happening. my car has seemed a bit lazy recently too though, maybe they have the flu?

and the adaptive ecu thing works more on input i think rather than speeds achieved so if you granny it up to 100mph it would hold the performance back more than if you caned it up to 70 and stuck there but always accelerated aggresivly. i think.

It would have been from new, not a fault developing over time - and you'd have heard it before.

Could it be that your dad drives lower down the rev range than you (around peak torque - 1900rpm) whereas you're driving nearer to the power (4000rpm)? This would feel a lot quicker on acceleration etc despite not going as fast.

Compared with other results from pd130 on the same rollers its about the same. Works out at 145bhp at the fly. Jabba and revo get around 165bhp at the wheels 175bhp at the fly.

Have you got access to vag-com to check boost and maf readings to see if anything looks iffy?

i was tending to keep it in gears longer at the Ring ,to save the clutch as much as possible. i haven't got a fully unlocked version of VAGCOM so can't do any MAF logs ,can I ? i dont think i would know how to do them anyway
