The Fabia IS strong..!!

Featured Replies

Hey..

Just thought of sharing this with you guys.. dont try it at home though:P

Hmm last week i was driving and a bicyle came infront of the car infront of me and got hit so i hit the car infront.. from the sound of it i thought my car would be in a bad shape after tht, i was surprised to see my car was not even sc ratched and the car i hit was a bit messed up.. even though it was an Old american thing but still the fabia was strong enough to break its Bumper.. Today I was on a traffic light and got hit by the car behind.. the sound of the crash was horrible and i thought my car would be seriously broken to peices.. got out of the car to see whats wrong.. Nuthing.. the paint of the other car is stuck on my rear bumper and the bumper kinda moved from its position . jus a lil bit though.. and you dont wana see what happened to the other car which was a 2006 Toyota Camry.. It was badly screwed up... The accidents were somehow annoying but when i think about it for a moment it puts a lil smile on my face.. Well done Fabia

2nd vote... and i'm sure Jason will be along with the 3rd for how damned tough these little cars are

The only thing i'd say is that although everything appears to be ok it might not be. Bumpers tend to flex in, the damage is done behind then they pop out again.

Ya i know what you mean... But itook the car for a little check up though and everything seems to be perfect.. the rear bumper needs a new paint though but overall everything seems to be well

I wouldn't recommend anyone test the Fabia chassis strength like I did, OK? :D But I can vouch for the B and A pillars being very tough indeed when exposed to rather a lot of stress. ;)

3rd vote from me. I was hit from behind. The fiesta was a mess. My bumper was cracked and the bootlid dented.

i think that modern cars are very good in crashes, i once saw an octavia get sandwiched between an artic lorry and a crash barrier but the bloke driving was ok. the passenger compartment was intact although the rest of the shell was mangled and it held it's rigidity even when the huge force of a lorry crushed it agianst the barrier.

Also cars are now designed to crumple up front to avoid damage (!) to pedestrians and soften the blow. Rears of cars are built strongly. Full stop...

Am I right? Or am I right?

Or not..?

Absoultley right.. I was in a 2005 Mondeo that hit a '96 Saab in the rear on a roundabout, probably at 20mph ish. The Saab was left with no damage at all but the Mondeo needed a new bonnet, grill, lights and a bit of bashing out.

as said cars are meant to dent, it absorbs the energy of the impact so its easier on the passengers and anyone you hit.

fabia156, open your boot and lift your carpet to check that there aren't any cracks/dents/folds in the floor and that the bootlid operates perfectly. if the floor isn't flat the car could well be a right-off, sad but true.

My understanding was that front and rear are meant to crumple (to "absorb" the energy of a collision) whilst still maintaining a rigid passenger cell? For this reason, a lower speed collision with a new and old car will do more damage to the new car!

I was very impressed with how well our '95 Corsa stood up to a 44 tonne lorry that hit it at 60mph on the M1 and the passenger cell remained completely in tact  Sadly the police were powerless to prosecute the Portugese lorry driver :(

I did all the checks though and the Fabia passed:P thanx anyways.. I think that the tow bar that I have in the Back protected my car from a worse damage

on the old car the boot was out of line, leaked ever since the accident and the bumper and hatch needer replaceing altho thats all the damage there was:) nothing wrong with the rest. when we got it back it still leaked:( why would they send it to honda to be fixed i have no idea!!

why do you have a tow bar?

LOL, I dont tow anything though.. I got my car used so this tow bar came on it from the previous owner, I dont have the key to remove the outter part of it so im keeping it, besides you do need it for some drivers in this country;) I hate the looks of it but seriusly it's a good thing for some drivers in here coz they drive right behind u with like 10 cm gap and it happens sometimes that they hit me at like 20 Km/h

This shows how the A and B pillars on mine held out despite landing on them both twice and actually resting on them in the end. Luckily the mongrel didn't end up the same way at the Ring. :D

Whoa man.. that looks aweful how did such accident happen? :D how fast u were goin?

happen=driving too fast round a corner, back end stepped out, I took off up a steep bank by the road.

fast? = see above. :D

The Fabia is strong in this one :)

devontupia... did u have ESP?

no, otherwise he would have known he was going to fast and slowed down ;)

:iagree: :rofl::thumbup:

would you say it was easy to flip a Fabia on a bend? or was it just speed that was a part of the issue. I decided to see what happened on a small roundabout tonight when I put my foot down and turned in.....it felt like the back end was stepping out a bit.

my 1.4 didnt have traction control....i nearly ended up faceing the wrong way on a road i put my foot down on a bend and i ended up trying to make it go in one direction it wouldnt go forward it kept on swerving left and right for a while...til i just breaked! was a little scary!

The best way to think of cornering is to think of the forces acting on a car. When you accelerate the weight shifts to the back of the car and under braking it shifts to the front. So, the most stable cornering forces will result from gentle acceleration through a corner to move the weight towards the back outside wheel.

The danger of traction control is that if you are accelerating hard (weight acting over the back wheels) and it decides to cut the power, you then have a weight shift to the front of the car which will potentially make the rear end go light and result in lift-off oversteer. I suspect that ESP is less brutal and probably more pro-active than ASR so the weight shift should be less pronounced, but still has potential to surprise the unsuspecting driver.... :D
