Connecting Laptop to Router

Featured Replies

Aieeee folks, its doing my head in!! I just splashed out on a new laptop and can't get it to access the web via the D-Link ADSL router. My home PC and the work laptop are both working through it just fine but the new one is not interested. The pair of computers symbol comes up in the system tray, but only the front one lights up, presumably the laptop sending to the router, but no reply ever comes. I've checked all the usual things like connections under the Internet Options box, so that they are the same as the other two machines, but still no good. Am I missing anything really obvious here? The laptop came with XP Media Center Edition (don't know why but it looks good) and in all other respects is fairly whizzo.

The laptop can actually see the Router in Network Connections, but no web access.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Have you ensured that its not set up for a proxy server?

In IE, go to Tools, Internet Options, Connections, LAN settings and untick 'Use a proxy server'.

Is it just web access which isn't working? An ipconfig /all from a command prompt of a working machine and a non-working machine may give some clues, as would a tracert to something like www.google.com. :D

It may just be something silly like the DNS isn't configured....

Have you restricted access to your router using MAC Address tables

Sorry, but the router was sent down by Head Office and I don't have access to the setup program (they changed the password). But as I say, my home machine does actually work through it fine using another of the four RJ45 outlets on the back of it. How do I set up DNS settings?

Thanks for your help on this. I would try swapping cables, ports, etc but I am scared of killing the system as I need it for the work laptop.

Go to a command prompt (Start ->Run->cmd.exe) and type in:

ipconfig /all

on a working and non-working machine. We should then be able to see the differences in setup :D

If the working machine has an IP address starting with 192.168. and the broken one has an IP address starting 169. something then the DHCP server in the router has not given your laptop an IP address for some reason.

Silly thought, but the new laptop is set to DHCP isn't it? I know it's the default but you never know.

The only other thing I can think of is the it's been set to allow a maximum number of systems to access but that's unlikely.
