conti contacts splitting

Featured Replies

Hi again folks, Was changing the wheels front to back on my Octy

and noticed my conti contacts were splitting on the outer and inner

edges of the tyre. centre was ok.

See attached link to image, anyone else had this problem. The tyres

still have a good bit of tread on them yet, the odd thing was that

the pics are of the rear tyres the front ones looked alright.

I must admit the Contis on my fabia were the same, i hadn't noticed but a kind Briskodian pointed them out.

I am in the process of changing mine with still 6mm left on the rears.

better safe than sorry.

Lets hope my 'temporary' Kumhos wear out before they self-destruct.

My tyres are the same (front and back), in fact I think the cracks in mine are worse. Its probably normal. Due to replace the set very soon anyway.

Has anyone wrote to continental about the problem. I rekon I have another 5k left in mine. Why should I dish out another 100+ for each tyre thats imperfect.!!!

Appreciating they are probably built more for traction and peformance than life but still it is a bit of a wallet buster. maybe I'm just asking too much to get 20K out of a tyre.!!!!

But thanks for the replies, Good to know its not just me who's being ripped off....

I'm running the same Conti's on the back of the Mondeo and they are still fine and crack-free. I'm assuming they weren't new when I picked up the car and they've since racked up 25k miles :D

I'm going to chance it and see how long I get out of them. cracks and all...

Hmm odd - I ran the original SC IIs on the rear of the car for near enough 38k. Went through two sets of fronts in the same time (SCIIs again).

Not a single problem like that though. I do about 40k/year, perhaps it's age-related?

Regards traction/performance, they are ok but certainly the wet performance isn't particularly fantastic, although predictable in behaviour.

this is a known prob with conties (and their sub brand uniroyal) - it tends to affect cars that are left out in the cold @ night.

best junk em and fit kumho/toyo - may not wear quite as well but then you dont have to junk them with 4-5mm on....

How are Kumho for road noise, I found the conti's a bit intruding but according most of the folks on this site they are probably the best for the 17" alloys.

would take ku31 over the conties

Hello,

Had the same problem with Dunlop sp2000s on my touran. Identified @ 1st service by the dealer - "What we'll do is, you pay for 4 new dunlops, we'll send the old ones off to dunlop and ask for a refund".

Yeah, right. After badgering VW "customer service", got 4 new tyres (Dunlops unfortunately) fitted under warranty. They argued they were wear and tear items, so not covered. I argues under Sale of Goods they were not fit for purpose when supplied by VW.

Dunlop sent me a letter after inspection, saying they were faulty and would give me a contribution to 4 new ones, I rang and asked them what was wrong with the old - they wouldn't tell me !

If still under warranty and within a reasonable mileage, I'd have a go at your dealer.

Got Michelin pilots on now - loads better. Will never buy another Dunlop again.

Seen plenty of Conti`s splitting like that, dont worry though its standerd...If its on the sidewalls as well then bin them

kumhos are ok, go for the 31`s and not the older 712`s

Phil

i've seen loads of Contis like that on the Ford vehicles i service , that is the reason i would never have a Conti on my car if it was the last set of tyres on earth , German engineering=bo11ocks
