Morning All

I own a 2001 Octavia estate tdi with 100K on the clock.

If I go above certain reves the turbo seems to cut out and the power significantly drops (usually going up hills.) If I stop and turn off the engine and re-start all is good. +

It has now progressed to the turbo sometimes working and sometimes not, not good when setting off across roundabouts.

I have had a new air flow sensor put in and my garage has attached it to the diagnostic machine and there is no improvement or warning codes.

Does this mean I need a new turbo (any idea on cost/good places to buy one and ease of fitting) or is there a magic trick any of you know that may work?

I think the tdi has variable inlet vanes which can stick....:confused:

Sure there was a thread on here somewhere about cleaning them, 'ave a search...

I believe the variable veins were only on the PD engines. Easy to check coz if it's VG then it shouldn't have a wastegate (although I'm not fully aware of the TDi VG turbo!)

Remove the compressor inlet and try spinning the wheel (Best to try this with the engine off!). It should spin freely if not then there either the wheels are rubbing, or the bearings need replacing or both. One of the biggest causes of turbo issues is not idling the engine for a minute when stopping i.e. turbo keeps spinning but no oil pressure is provided.

Nope the 110 has variable vanes that can stick.

A search will find instructions on cleaning but often it's new turbo time :(

the best thing for cleaing a turbo is ground nutmeg..... yes! ground nutmeg.. i $hit you not..

the reason the vnt units stop working properly is because the levers that actuate the variable vanes get caked in hoorible sticky oil residues.

The turbo can be cleaned if you are somewhat more DIY inclined.
