Mental head unit and electrical gremlins

Featured Replies

My Symphony head unit has gone mad!!!

Turns itself off and then back on again, tuned to a different station, won't turn on, turns on and says "SAFE", turns on, but won't see the CD changer....etc, etc, etc.

Had the car in for it's 30K service and reported the problem to my dealer.....no worries, new head unit ordered and to be fitted at my convenience.

I've also noticed that the head unit and dash lights have been flickering a bit when going over bumpy stretches of road. I am also fairly convinced that the headlights were flickering at the same time.

I have uprated bulbs fitted, but wouldn't have expected them to cause any problem (should I?). I just wondered if anyone else has had similar gremlins in their cars??

My Dad has a 2006 Fabia vRS and when I told him about my stereo, he said "oh.....mine does that sometimes"!!! Time for him to get it sorted me thinks eh???

My headunit does this... turns off then back on again, makes popping noises... said 'SAFE'. It then decides to behave... Took it in today, and they couldnt find any fault and hence wouldnt replace it... damn gremlims! What did they say was wrong with your headunit so that i have some ammunition for when i go back?

My HU mutes itself when my mobile phone rings??? The phone sits on the cubby hole below the HU. V strange but useful. Obviously I pull into a safe area , stop and turn off the engine when I answer the call!

could be due to a slight movement in that little wheel thing next to the headlight switch that controll the brightness of the display

Or a problem with the earth connection somewhere back to the battery, especially with all those other electrical problems. Could explain why the stereo thinks the battery has been disconnected and safe appearing.

I was thinking along the earth fault lines too.........was going to have a quick look round to see if I could see anything obvious, before taking it back to the dealer.

Seems to happen over bumps, so it would suggest a dodgy/loose conection that keeps making and breaking with the movement of the car.

The dealership agreed that the head unit was faulty, as when they tested it, it did not see the changer unit at all. I think I'll get the new one and then rip it out straight and fit something like an Alpine unit with a screen.
