Boost guage on a diesel

Featured Replies

Can it be fitted? I am wondering if it might show me anything useful with my turbo issues?

Also if possible, what sort of amount of money would I be looking at?

Cheers,

Matt

It can be done and should not cost much. Gauges start from about £10 upwards. The only difference is that a turbo diesel does not create vacume like a petrol so the gsuge will not move into negative figures. You may find that the vacume pump makes the needle vibrate slightly when its at zero but they do basically work!

You need (assuming you're not planning mega tuning) a 2 bar boost gauge, unlike petrol ones which tend to go no higher than 1 bar. Prices start cheap, but its best to get one of decent quality, and which lights up too. Simply install gauge in a pod, or similar, wire up electrics to earth and headlight switched power, tap vacuum pipe into a fitting somewhere on your turbo pipework, and go have fun. :D

They're very good for diagnosing turbo issues before they pop/fail/throw a wobbly. I've got a 2.5 bar gauge as I can easily push it over 2 bar on initial acceleration.

WW_VRS has a nice one that I fitted for him a few weeks ago, he was going to post up pictures but I suspect he's been too busy.

ok... seems fair enough... but where do I locate the correct vacuum pipe?

Any recommendation as to where to source some decent parts from? I quite fancy the 3-in-1 pannel which fits underneath the headunit, but that space is useful for holding my sunglasses etc. Guess I could just have the guage at one end of it....

I don't think you'll find a vacuum pipe as such. Oil burners don't produce vacuum in the way that a petrol does. You need to break into the intake pipework after the turbo.

I had a kit which meant drilling an 8mm hole in the inlet manifold, then a screw was screwed into it, which had a tiny nipple on the end of it. This is what my vacuum pipe connected to. Now, that's blocked off and I have an EGR replacing straight pipe with a boost feed tap incorporated into it.

Pretty much what I did for WW, drilled the inlet manifold just after the EGR (Nice flat bit on the top), tapped it 1/8 NPT and screwed the sensor in.

Bit of a butt clenching moment drilling the inlet manifold, removed the EGR and blocked the inlet with a rag to stop any swarf going in and hoovered whilst drilling.

I think the only diesel that comes with a boost guage as standard is the Alfa 159 and Brera!

Those crazy Italians!!!

WW's is an electrical one is it? Ah, mine's purely mechanical so I have a nice narrow vacuum pipe coming into the car through the bulkhead, to the gauge in the dash. :) I expect WW has just a single wire.

Yeah he has an LCD display, nice and discreet, nice and easy to wire up.

Mine is ultra NON discreet. Must get about to getting some pods and then getting two more gauges for oil temp and pressure.... :)

Any details on suppliers for these parts?

He would be the best man to get in touch with.
